The Arkansas Department of Health says a person who recently traveled out of the United States has tested positive for the Zika virus.

The department says that the person has a mild case of Zika, which is spread by mosquitoes and is suspected of causing a spate of birth defects in Brazil. Spokeswoman Meg Mirivel would not say whether Tuesday if the infected person is a man or woman or give the person's age.

Mirivel says the individual traveled to the Central America-Caribbean region, though she would not specify which country. Some U.S. travelers have been infected abroad with Zika but there are no cases of local infection in the U.S. so far.

Brazilian officials have linked the virus with a rare birth defect, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have urged pregnant women to consider postponing flights to areas where the virus is prevalent.

I've read that they suggest women avoid getting pregnant until 2018. I think there's something more going on here.

If you had the virus now could it possibly cause birth defects in the future. or would you have to be pregnant when you became symptomatic?

Hopefully, there will be a big cold snap that keeps the mosquitoes down. I'm sure everything will be ok.

If there was ever a US state which didn't need anything more to hinder their kids it's Arkansas.

From what I've read it's a fait accompli that it will spread nationwide in the U.S.

Serious shite.

Luckily mosquitos are the main vector, so a person who got it while traveling isn't a big concern for other people.

However, I did read that it may potentially be sexually transmitted male to female.

You have to be pregnant for birth defects. At the point of conception included. Possibly up to 10 days after recovering from Zika.

just during the 1st trimester, so for three months +- 2 weeks, don't get bit by a mosquito

Yeah. I read where the virus was detected within male semen.

Pretty scary stuff. An incredible amount of Brazilian kids already infected--up to 2% in one particular town. Poor families.
