The days of the 3-sport letterman are just about over. Football coaches want their players in off-season lifting and conditioning programs, plus spring football. They might let their skill positions run track. But coaches at the high school level are really against multi-sport athletes.

My co-worker's daughter played select softball. Playing on her high school team was just for pride/fun. She is in her fourth year starting for Memphis and is about to graduate with an engineering degree. He probably spent more on softball than she received in scholarship money but she is a top-notch human being; much of which is attributable to her athletic competitions.

To each his own. "My way" is simply that and may not be the best for you, and obviously, vice versa.

My sons went to computer camps so they could get into highly competitive STEM programs and have successful lives instead of selling used cars because they didn’t make a college ball team.

Coaches that want single sport athletes are stupid. Listen to people that actually know what they’re talking about like college and pro coaches. They all say playing multiple sports makes you a better athlete in general and helps with whatever you’re best at.

Things were better when kids just played baseball at their local playground. If you were good enough, you played on the all star team which travelled around to other local playgrounds. Not so serious.

Which is fricking insane for little kids. Kids should be able to try a bunch of different shite when they’re little instead of specializing at 9-10 years old.

My daughter did gymnastics, soccer, dance, theater, karate, and numerous other things before she settled in with volleyball.

It was honestly by luck bc a woman I work with played college ball, and her mom played volleyball in the Olympics back in the 70s. She went out to a local public beach park, tried it out, and fell in love with it.

I totally agree with not trying to rat hole you kid into one thing, but putting down on parents that want the best for there kid is fricking retarded.

My daughter didn’t start volleyball until she was almost 11. Had been through, and tried lots of other things, before she found her passion. Now she’s either in the backyard doing pepper, or working on her game.

We as parents intentionally took the summer beach season off for 2 reasons. 1: not to burn her out, and 2: we all need a break.

I'm laugh at these threads. Why worry about what other people do? And you should educate yourself. Most of these kids play multiple sports....and do not play baseball year round. You sound pissy for no reason.

Not every kid out there is "Brayden" or "Cage". At least they arent submerged in fortnite or call of duty. And whats better than enjoying sports with family and friends? Playing sports teaches discipline and competitiveness. Something the world has come to frown upon.

You sound jaded brother. Dont be a hater.

It can definitely be too much, but as someone said before, it’s better than them playing on iPads. From what I’ve seen, the kids are happy and the parents are happy, so who is hurt by it?

The answer is that it has hurt rec participation, and that does bother me, but it is what it is.

One of my grandsons played league and made a couple all star teams. He’s a decent player and likes the game. Well one year they wanted him to play travel ball he was 10 at the time(13 now) The parents were terrible and the coach was auditioning for an MLB I think. My grandson wasn’t as good as most of the kids at the time. He told me one day baseball wasn’t fun anymore, we let him quit. We had some great fishing trips the next couple weekends

Which is the exact thing to do!! Let the kid choose their own future. Don’t force them into doing anything other than being a good student, and good person.

We are very hands off when it comes to our daughters play. We even make her take breaks.

It’s not good or advantageous to make these kids play as much as a lot of them do. Club/league teams can be a bad thing if you burn them out to fast.

some would argue buying the max level instead of basic at the drive thru car wash is a bigger waste

To each their own. My son has been passionate about baseball since he was old enough to walk. He loves it...and if it means he gets to do what he loves...he can play travel ball. He made his high school team(granted, small private school) and starts as a freshman. He's actually one of the better kids on the team.

He's also played basketball, golf, and soccer. He loves to be on the field competing. He's going to give football a shot this fall.

Moral of the story is - it's important to let them find what they love. They can learn a lot about life playing team sports. He was on a travel team the last several years before high school. They had some really great kids and some really great parents. We m parental friends were made along the way.

It is playing at the highest competitive level, if you want to be measured against the best. It is not worth the price some charge. I enjoyed seeing all the talent in one place. Baseball is hard to make the show, very hard.

Same here. It was for the actual players who had real potential. Then it became a money scheme and anyones little Johnny can be on one so the parents can live vicariously through their child and they have all these tournaments and World Series to rack up the trophies for parents to post on Facebook and brag about their future mlb player that will at best be a backup on the HS team
