They look intimidating because they're so thick, but once you get into it you'll read through them fast because they're that engrossing. It took me 3-4 months to read the 5 books out now, and a lot of that time breaks in between books.
I'd also like to add Star Trek and Doctor Who as honorable mentions to my choices above.

If you had started this thread on the Movie/TV board you'd be getting a lot less crap about nerds and such.

Star Trek (perhaps the most optomistic universe.
Ann Rice - Here Vampires/Witches, Werewolves, stuff folds in pretty well. (I know, I know, it's horror not necessarily Sci Fi but I'm including it anyway).
GRRM - If I'm remembering right the thinking is that the SOI&F universe is part of a larger universe which includes elements of Sci Fi, Fantasy and maybe Horror).
