Didn't they give those away as prizes for school fundraisers?

yep--Coke rugbies and michael jordans, pegged jeans.
then when banana republic and Abercrombie opened in Riverwalk, i became a veritable safari guide. Banana had some killer sales. i still have that Israeli messenger or paratrooper bag --$3.

Had:
OP and Panama Jack
Sperry Top-Sider and Eastlands
Levi's 501 button fly
Plaid shirts (had one LL Bean exactly like this)
Pair of Reebok hightops like these (had the dark blue pair):
Pair of these Nike's with blue Swoosh instead of red

I saw my cousin in a pair and I vowed not to wear those.

Pretty much this. Abercrombie & Fitch too, when it was still an outdoor supplier and not the teen trash it is now. J Crew as well, before it went full hipster.
Also Perlis, Lacoste and Sperry.
I can still wear pretty much anything I owned in the late 80's or 90's(if it still fit) and not look like an idiot. It's called being timeless.
Fads are for trash.
