It would definitely not go underground - why would people join a random social club without big parties on campus?
Honestly, pledge ship should just be done away with and it would solve a lot of problems.
ETA: regarding the underground thing, i just don't see college kids putting up the effort consistently enough to organize all that, get new members, etc. to keep an actual "underground fraternity" going.
Maybe some small number will do that and make some sort of social club but i just don't see it being that widespread. Could certainly be wrong though.

Uh... a fraternity without pledges isn't a fraternity. Some of the craziest shite I saw at UT was 1) during pledging 2) living in the fraternity house after initiation.
Pledging sucks but there's some fun shite that goes on. And for all the stuff that sucks, you put up with it because you know everyone who's ever been initiated has done it as well. It's a rite of passage.
Women wouldn't understand because sorority pledges have a very different experience.

Pledge ship or pledging is gonna change.
I know some schools are very very involved with all pledging processes. B/c hazing has gotten so bad.

We got kicked off campus for hazing. We did go underground for a while as nationals tried to rebuild the chapter with new guys. That was over 20 years ago and to this day I think it was a horrible decision. Nationals should of just shite canned the whole chapter for a few years, then started from scratch but our alumni nixed that. So there was a lot of bad blood and tension between both groups which only made matters worse. It took time to heal wounds and some guys were actually able to go back and get their membership again.
The one thing I will say about the guys that were kicked out is that everyone stayed close, even to this day. We didn't need to pay a rental fee to keep our friendship.

Join a business fraternity. Guys and girls, no hazing, less expensive and no house. Also gets the bonus of prestige and helps when getting a job.

No, sororities are very philanthropic
Yes, college kids will find a way but I'm sure LSU would love to avoid the liability if they would just take it all off campus, eliminate houses

Your posting style on the OT perfectly encapsulates the preconceived notions of what folks think a typical frat daddy consists. It's genius

Ill just copy my post from the other thread. I agree it sucks and was actually very fun and i made some great friends. But its just not controlled enough in today's environment for a school sanctioned event. Some people take it / themselves too seriously and think they have so much power and the pledges don't know when its crossing the line or how to get out of that situation.
For me i went through well after it was really bad - running errands, helping out the house staff, cleaning peoples apartments, study hall, some weird mental shite like being locked in a dark room with everyone and a weird song on repeat, the scavenger hunts, have nasty stuff thrown at you, eating some horrible bullshite (not literal shite), passing a bottle down the line (not a big deal between 30+ people), exercise / bow and toes, a couple knees or kicks and a few nights where you had to get kneed int he leg a bunch or whatever as a group on the big nights.
That said, there are alway some people that take themselves / greek life/ the fraternity way too seriously and take it too far. Obviously its like any group of people where you like some, are friendly with some and simply don't like others.
I hated some of the people that took it too seriously and were a-holes. I've never understood the joy of kicking a defenseless person or some of the other bull shite people do - especially when its at a personal house with just a few people. A very very small level of that at the beginning lets them be scared and all but it really isn't necessary.
I had to kick out some people from my personal house a couple times when my roommate and some other of our "friends" brought pledges home late at night. i didn't like it at first and then they started taking it too far and i told them to go get in my bedroom and got rid of the extra people.
Point being that even in a fairly chill system / group you can't control everyone and the whole pledge system is just not controlled enough to continue IMO.
LOL also I just realized you thought I was a woman - not quite.

if that is possible that is fine, just needs to be controlled by people who can't be influenced by the idiots who take greek life so seriously and are on a 20 year old power trip.

Did/Do you participate in a fraternity or sorority at LSU?
Yes. It made LSU that much better for me.
Will the system be purged by the university? If so, how long from now will that occur?
No. Worst thing is these chapters will be kicked off until there are no more. You have to remember each chapter on campus is a revenue stream for the national fraternity and LSU.
Assuming it will inevitably go underground if the purge occurs, are more clandestine and unregulated organizations a greater threat to student safety than the current system?
College kids will be college kids, regardless of the regulations you put on them. They will continue to do what they have been doing for the past years. Only difference is LSU won't be tied to any of it.
Posted on 9/15/17 at 1:28 pm to white beans
1. Did not participate
2. Fraternities may be but not sororities. Sororities seem to care about legacy and leadership. Fraternities seem to only care about partying and the four or five years they are there.
3. Clandestine and unregulated organizations are already there in some form. So, no different than now. I think the University will be safer because these are not directly tied to them.

no
depends on the group - I never nor did i ever see anyone forced to drink, smoke, take anything any and all hazing I experienced was mental and calisthenic and never got out of hand.
of course this was in the 80s

There is too much money coming in from Greek alums
Is that honestly true, though? Non TAF giving to LSU is in the toilet generally and the Greeks get dicked with a lot (unlike the Greeks at Alabama, for instance) for a group with supposed juice so does anybody have some honest to goodness numbers on that?
But to answer the OP, the Greek system will remain intact, just under ever more restrictive rules. But that applies to everybody else on campus, too.
