Get him to become a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant. Probably close to the same money as a real doctor.

I assumed that is where he was based off getting in from connections

It's really not once you see how the system works. Just look at the OP if you don't believe me. Kid got into med school on connections. There is almost no one that will get into CRNA school on connections alone. There aren't enough spots to give to a charity case. That's just the reality of it.

The problem there is that tuition is sky high and there is a pretty low match rate. Only thing worse than failing out is completing all 4 years and not getting a residency

You've gotten some good advice here. Let the kid spend a year or two working "normal" jobs and see what he likes/doesn't like. It might reignite a passion in medicine or he might find a job he really loves. I'm a huge proponent of doing every job you can think of when you're young and don't have a lot of responsibilities. He won't know until he tries out some different options.

Redirect him to PT, OT or chiropractor school.

Include NP school in his future. Will be the best thing that could happen to him. Alopaths are falling out of favor with the public. All that pharmaceutical training is showing. Send him to a school that teaches nutrition and natural ways the body heals itself. It will be the best thing he can do.

The whole, ‘I was smart enough to be a doctor but I wanted to be a nurse’ thing is just hard to believe. I understand if someone smart enough to be an MD went to get a PhD in chemistry or PChem because they didn’t want to be in medical field…but academically superior RNs is just tough to get my head around.

Sounds like he’s almost done. Tell him take his pick of something he wants to do for a year and go do it. School will be there when he’s ready.

The strings were cut on me when I was 20, just graduated college in 3 yrs, worked 2 jobs while in school, interviewed, picked one of the job offers and moved on. Thanks to mom and dad for loving me and instilling a no-quitting work ethic in me. Let him move on and work it out himself!
C’est lavie!

I agree, but with an exception....I have worked with some specialty/sub-specialty NPs that went to NP school later in life. They are/were the sole over night provider in CVICU/MICUS in a busy Level I teaching facility. They are "Nurses" but had they been younger, I have no doubt doubt they would have made it had they chosen medical school.

Yeah, I was thinking nurse anesthetis...

Just googled it. Didn't realize it takes about 10 years to become one.. thought it was less.

Can be done in less than 7 years.

1) Become an RN -3 years- Associate's Degree is fine
2) Work as an RN in a ICU setting or Level 1 Trauma center for 2 years.
3) Get into Nurse Anesthetist school -16 months

I personally know 2 people that took this exact route. Now they make bank!

Your son probably has already taken all of the prerequisite courses required to become an RN. So, you can knock a year off of the RN education timeframe.

As someone with first hand experience, thats definitely an effort issue. No one makes it that far and fails based purely on intelligence. Point him to PA school if he still wants to be in the medical field. PT and OT aren’t great options anymore. Don’t even consider chiropractic school imo.

I’ve never heard of people failing out of med school. I have a friend who quit med school while he was the top ranked student (to become an artist), and another who quit to be an engineer…and I lived with a vet student who was always in ‘summer school’, but I’ve never heard of someone failing out. Just thought they made it hard enough to get in…

I believe the DO board exams are called “Level 1, 2, and 3” instead of “Step 1, 2, and 3” for MD students.

100%...Only people I knew that got in and did not finish was from life and/or health events.

Last research I read (years ago) said the probably of finishing school once accepted is greater than 95%.

Time for some aptitude testing.

JohnsonOConnorResearch

Probably a smart kid with other talents he doesn't even know he has. JOCR has been testing aptitudes for over 100 years and may help guide your son in his search for his life mission.
