You could go across the tracks to the other side of town, honk your horn and get a blowy for a shiny half dollar.

I am not in the 65+ crowd, not really even close to it.. I am 39, but a few of these I can relate to.

quote:

1. Coke vending machines that cost 6 cents

The barber shop I go to still has a coke vending machine (with the bottled cokes), while it is $1 now, when I was a kid it use to be like $0.15. But it is the only place I know that still has a bottle coke vending machine.

3. School lunches cost a quarter in Vermillion Parish

I graduated HS in 1997. Lunch was $0.75. Looking back at it today, that was one hell of a deal for a full lunch meal (including a drink). If you put together a sandwich today, two slices of bread, ham, lettuce, etc. cost under $0.75, but that's not including a drink.. And at least with the school lunch, you got a cup of fruit, bread, etc.

6. No seat belts in cars

Car seats were not really a thing yet when I was a kid. Today kids have to be over a certain weight and height before not using a car seat, but I remember just sitting in the back seat of the car, no seat belt... Well, I think they had them.. But I remember my dad use to let me ride in the back of his truck like it wasn't a big deal.

7. No school in Vermillion parish had air conditioning

In middle school we had no AC. The windows were always open and on days the wind blew a lot, it would blow dust inside.. Students who sat by the window had to hold their papers down with whatever they had (ruler, etc).

2. Using a hand cranked ice cream machine

Used to love making homemade ice cream when we had company over.

3. School lunches cost a quarter in Vermillion Parish

Here in Evangeline Parish as a senior in 1978, they were .75.

4. State of Louisiana issued 3 tablets and pencils to each school kid

I remember this from grade school.

6. No seat belts in cars

No car seats either, and yet most of us lived.

7. No school in Vermillion parish had air conditioning

Didn't have A/C in my grade school rooms either. Hell, the gym at Mamou High still doesn't have A/C.

8. The tv might get 2 stations if you turned the antenna correctly

I guess here in Evangeline Parish we were lucky, we got 3 until cable arrived here in the early to mid 80s.

9. Baton Rouge had one bridge

Yeah I remember going to Baton Rouge and driving in front of the old Esso refinery, with the Tiger painted on the oil storage tanks.

10. Tiger Stadium had wood bench seats, no charge for the splinters

Didn't attend my first game in BR until 1976, so I missed this one.

11. LSU had mandatory ROTC, freshmen wore those stupid beanies

Yep, that's what my Dad told me.

12 Worrying about your draft status

Didn't have to worry about the draft, but still had to register for Selective Service.

A year or two before my freshman year, the HS got rid of the typewriters and had a "computer lab". Typing was still a class, but I never took it. I taught myself how to do it (which is my situation with almost everything. If I really want to learn it, I have to teach myself).

I was looking through some of my grandfather's old papers and came across a receipt from Coca-Cola where he bought 70 cases of coke for $70. One dollar a case. It was from 1956.

I remember some of the late 60's... the 70's was a blast, you could ride your bikes anywhere night or day. You
could leave your doors unlock... The good ole days.

White only drinking fountains and white only restrooms

You felt rich if you had more than 2 pairs of shoes

45 records for the record player

The freezer in the refrigerator was just big enough to hold one gallon of ice cream and it had to be defrosted on a regular basis
