quote:Yep. Look at Europe. The drinking age is 18 and drinking as a younger teenager is not taboo at all. Kids learn to drink and handle alcohol while still living with their parents and under control. For some reason, dumbass Americans think it is a good idea to not let gets drink at all or learn about it until they are on their own completely.
That is because it is so taboo for kids. If we taught responsible drinking in the home we would have less bingeing in college aged adults.

I'm a smoker and I completely agree with the new rule
As a smoker, I'd buy an 18 year old some beer or weed, but not cigarettes.

Not only do we trust 18 year olds to go to war at 18, but they can also vote . They can be trusted with stuff as important as that but can't be trusted to decide on smoking or drinking beer
No, actually, 18 year olds have proven they CAN'T be trusted when it comes to beer/alcohol. I could give two shits about smoking but 18-23 year olds make up a small portion of the driving population but a massive percentage of alcohol-related fatalities on the highways. Teenagers are statistically proven to act more stupid behind the wheel, make dumber decisions and create more accidents- under the influence or not. I don't think there's any reasonable argument that society would be better by lowering the drinking age in the US.
As far as voting, 18 year olds shouldn't be allowed to do that either. As far as going to war, I tell you what- if you're 18-20 and in the military, serving (or have served) in a war zone, drink up. You earned it. But everyone else can shut the frick up.

Quite a leap you've made there.
All I'm asking for is consistency. If someone by reaching age 18 is deemed legally sound and capable of making reasoned decisions about their life and their health, can enter into any contract, purchase a car or house, get married, start and run a business, (I could go on), I think it's utterly absurd that that person can be denied the right to buy or have a sip of alcohol or deemed legally incapable of making that decision for themselves.

Sorry, but a switch doesn't magically flip and you go from being a child to becoming a capable adult. 18-20 year olds have shown they abuse alcohol at a much, much higher rate than older people. As a result, the public is endangered at much higher rate. An 18 year old smoking a cigarette behind the wheel probably isn't going to kill me, so that's why the smoking age of consent is lower.
There is no consistency but if we are to get a standardized age for smoking/drinking/gambling, etc, it should be higher, not lower.
