Prius. Since I have the money for the car, save money on gas.

As a frequent renter of cars, I can tell you Nissians have terrible gas mileage and Hunydia has the best.
As a frequent traveler, I can tell you Suburu is popular in Mountainous areas. You'll look like a fool driving a full-time 4-wheel drive in the flat lands of Louisiana.

What's the life of the batteries on a Prius? I know it's not a cheap replacement when the time comes for new bats, also is it pronounced Preeus or Pryus? like can someone pry us out of this thing if we crash?

You are only looking at new cars
This is a silly requirement unless mandated by company vehicle, etc.
I'd much rather have a $42,000 car thats 18 months old and has 15,000 miles on it and has depreciated to $30,000 than to have a $30,000 car that's brand new with 15 miles on it.
Used Lexus IS250 is so much better than a brand new freaking Camry.

I have the exact same philosophy

If you have to factor in fun to drive then WRX is the correct answer. Its loud and rides a little stiff and doesnt have the interior trim of equal priced cars.
TL;DR
WRX
VW GTI
Focus ST are the answers.

I'd get a slightly used challenger. With a clean carfax and low miles.
I know you said new, but challenger>>>>>Camry

I agree the requirement of new is ridiculous. If it has to be new, new Honda Accord Sport. The leds look awesome and it has nice options.
I was in the same position in 2006: new Honda accord or used 20k TSX for 1k cheaper. I still love my 137k tsx and I havent had any problems. Its not fast but I put a larger rear sway bar, acura aspec suspension and awesome continental DW tires and it handles great. To this day the only feature I really want are cooled seats. I wouldve been unhappy with the accord after 2 years.
With that said, a used IS250 is the best option here. My next car will be a 60k gs350 fsport that I buy for 45k used.

A challenger is a dodge, so not even close.

Funny, I really wanted a IS250 or 350 until I drove both. They truly felt anemic and uninspired. Acceleration was loud and sounded more like a Civic than a BMW. I walked in intending to buy one and walked out not wanting any piece of the car. For what it is trying to be it just seemed to miss the target.
I did have a rental VW Jetta this week and was impressed by a sub $20K car. I'm thinking that a loaded TDI or gas engine or even a Passat may be a viable option. The GTI if you don't need a trunk.
EDIT--looks like a loaded Jetta GLI is about $25. Passats can be had sub $30 and given good negotiation skills you may be able to even get a CC for $30. CC's are nice btw.

Bought my wife a loaded Passat TDI SEL and they run a tad over 30 decked out with everything. Next model down is SE for just under 30. They are great cars and the milage blows most hybreds away. Avoid anything with a battery.
