Not better than a Prius. And the new ones have been used as taxis and gone over 200k miles with no battery issues. Toyota has been doing this tech a long time, and has it figured out it seems.
ETA: The Passat is definitely a bigger and more luxurious ride, though. All depends on what you need. You'll also be paying $0.35 or so more per gallon compared to the Prius.
TDI was on the shortlist when we got our Prius though. Can't go wrong with either IMO.

The new Audi a3 is the cats arse as long as you are not huge the nav system is cool as hell go drive one but it's hard to beat the Jetta for the money

I don't know why, but somehow I thought about the Passat when I read your post. Still, that's a very good price on a diesel Jetta if it's legit.
