I think I heard a while back that LSU hired someone from one of those online degree companies that's advertised on TV to increase their online degree presence. I would think it's practically free money for LSU.

Where is the online degree from? I took online classes from a major university that is otherwise a brick and mortar institution and is accredited. Employers do not know the difference unless I tell them.
I wouldn't frick around with something like University of Phoenix though unless you just need a box checked.

There is a difference in "online degrees". There are the for-profit organizations such as DeVry, University of Phoenix, etc. and then there are actual state schools that allow kids to take classes online and obtain their degrees online.
The latter is perfectly fine, the former is ok for entry level positions.

As a business owner, I will say this. While degrees aren’t viewed the same as they were twenty years ago, they do tell me one thing about the applicant. It means he, or she - gotta say that these days, is capable of getting their arse out of bed and going to class. Capable of sticking with something for four or more years and completing assignments. That is valuable. An online degree doesn’t tell me those things. That being said, an advanced degree completed online while employed in their career field (with some class contacts as seen in most MBA type online programs) tells me the person has ambition and can juggle school and work. Again, that tells me something about the applicant.
IMO, there is no substitute for a brick and mortar four year degree. I am not hiring some kid straight out of high school and have to deal with him maturing into an adult. They can do that shite on daddy’s dime in college.

Where on their resume will it say their degree is online?
The only thing that should "matter" in your case is is the degree in a relevant field and is it a good school. If you're sifting through resumes and see "[good reputable school] - MBA" you aren't gonna know if they went in person or online. Nor should it matter.

Kind of depends. If the degree is from a regionally accredited university (LSU, USC, Texas, etc.) I don't think it really matters if it is online or in person that you received it. Now, if it is a strictly online school, it needs to be investigated further. If it is regionally accredited it doesn't matter, but if it is nationally accredited I'd be concerned.

Depends on the job and the company. You're not going to be a managing director at Goldman Sachs with a degree from University of Phoenix.

That's what I'm doing right now... taking online classes through Nicholls State. Also, you are for the most part on your own. You're given deadlines and minimal guidance and are required to complete assignments without the ability to ask questions in a traditional classroom environment. Having done both classroom and online classes, I think the online version is more challenging.

The correct answer is that it depends. What is the purpose of the degree, and does it help demonstrate that you have useful skills. Also, many many reputable schools now have online programs. An online degree from the University of Phoenix or Midwestern Directional State won't mean squat, but I doubt an MS from the likes of UCLA, Johns Hopkins, or Purdue would get overlooked.

ah, gotcha. Those are garbage. More and more accredited schools are putting degree programs online. Lsu has a few Masters level programs or post bacc certificate programs. I plan on doing their Construction Management Post Bacc once I graduate in december. Mcneese, Northwestern, and ULM have a few B.S. programs. There is nothing on the degree that says you earned it online.

Absolutely agree with this. Your degree(s) should do nothing more than get you in the room. It's your experience and your reputation that will get you a great job. If you just graduated but don't have any professional experience, then if you did internships/apprenticeships while in college, that's also something I'm interested in. How you performed there is an indicator of how you project as an employee.

It can be. Mcneese has a policy where at least one exam has to be proctored. Some teachers proctor all of their exams and those can be tough. Others just Procter the last ones and the rest are open book. For a bull shite elective it is a breeze with open book. Finance was tough, the quizzes were open book (still took hours to do them) and the exams were all proctored. I didn't have the benefit of a teacher explaining things.
