Louder is just easier. You can have a minimally restricted exhaust system that isn't obnoxious.

Oh yeah? How so?

Cutting out the cat?
A non performance muffler?

Like it or not, allowing the engine to breath more efficiently will produce a more robust sounding engine.

Dont know much about cars but was thinking of purchasing a used Mercedes suv. Obviously you know a lot more, so tell me why im making a bad choice. 2013 glk350. Seems well made inside/out and i like the body compared to some other mid size.

I was being extreme, but there's a kernel of truth there.

The biggest problem with Mercedes in particular in the electronics. A pretty significant fraction of their cars seem to get sold with severe electrical gremlins.

Further guessing at why this is, well, newer Mercedes have quite a lot of electronics to fail, and Americans tend to be less than gentle with this stuff. A German family might never try to operate 2 power seats and the sunroof at once with the A/C on full blast, the stereo cranked, and a DVD playing. An American family will (and will then have a difficult time articulating to the technicians exactly what happened).

That 2013 GLK you're looking at is definitely susceptible to this crap, but if you can confirm that everything is working after 6 whole years, you might have a good one on your hands.

If, on the other hand, the seller tries to hand-wave away random electrical failures involving tangential crap you might tend to overlook, I'd suggest you run away quickly.

The other general statement I'll make about German cars is that the day when their road manners were just head-and-shoulders above everything else is over. When car nerds were falling in love with the BMW 2002, American and Japanese cars were shipping with leaf springs and straight axles. Those days are over.

I don’t understand the resale value of Accords nowadays. It jumped substantially it seemed. 10k for an accord thats 7 years old with 125k miles.

And truck resale values.

All of those things are disposable, and most of them ultimately come from a Nissan subsidiary. I don't like them but the Subarus aren't any worse than any other CVT.

With my car I could about double the power before the stock exhaust becomes a restriction.

Most are putting on loud exhaust because they like the sound. I've considered it but I prefer not to draw attention to myself if I decide to get heavy on the pedal. I've also considered cold starts and waking up my neighbors.

Read up on air intake and exhaust a bit.

You can gain a lot of horsepower, get much much better gas mileage and extend the life of your engine with a performance muffler and better air intake.

Louder exhaust have a
Very legit purpose.

That is pretty bold, so let's unpack it.

First the intake. Most modern cares due to desire for performance and fuel economy run at pretty high VE (volumetric efficiency) given the air going into the engine is now controlled by computers attempts to reduce intake restrictions tend to have very little impact on power or fuel economy when not combined with other modifications that can take advantage of the lower restrictions.

On the exhaust side lowering back pressure is often seen as a universally good thing. To a degree it is but it may result in a negative effect on scavaging within the particular engines desired powerband. Admittedly both inertial and wave scavaging will be less affected by a change in muffler than a change in primary or collector size/length it still can be a bad idea unless the engine is modded to take proper advantage of the changes. Even if you gain max torque or HP you may well be losing somewhere else in the torque curve which is likely to be a negative on most daily drivers.

The entire induction and exhaust system is a system and just changing one or two parts won't produce big gains and you will almost always see losses somewhere else.

Louder exhausts don't always mean lower restriction anyway and IMO extending the life of the engine is just bunk.

It was a direct response to how wonderful Subaru's are. Agreed, CVT's are garbage across the board.

Subaru seems more determined to inflict them across the board than other manufacturer's.

You may want to read up on the GLK 350 fuel system issues, they are by far the biggest pattern issue on the 2013s.

I owned a Tundra until last year and can confirm.

They're woefully behind the times on their technology and options. You're not far off when saying they're a decade behind.

This model Chevy is one of the saddest looking trucks in modern times.

I don’t care for old cars. I have no interest in anything pre-1980.

I like the looks of many American cars from the 1980s and 1990s.

The Toyota Sienna is a really nice vehicle with plenty of power and most families should have one instead of a Yukon.

I don’t understand why SUVs are a status symbol. Sorry soccer mom, no one thinks you’re any cooler bc you drive a Tahoe or Explorer.

Yeah the Tundra feels like a truck and that’s why I bought one. I wanted just a few features but not excessive electronics. It’s a little thirsty but rock solid. So it has pros and cons like anything else. it certainly is not cutting edge.

If I was in the market now I’d look at the ecoboost or the Chevy 6.2.

So IYO all loud exhausts are modern vehicles?

Spin it as you wish but not all loud exhausts are because the owners are lazy. If this is where you stand you both have tunnel vision.

I have a 1993 Chevy k1500 4wd that unfortunately has a v6. Before I decide whether to buy a crate V8 engine you damn well better know I'm going to massively increase the air intake with a throttle body spacer, cold air induction, performance air filter, remove the cat and install a dual 3" exhaust with flowmasters, which will make the truck rumble and gain a Lot more performance, life and feul efficiency.

That's a fact jack, I drive and see the results every day.

Jatco CVTs, found in Nissans and Subarus, are garbage. Toyota and others makes reliable CVTs. Nothing inherently wrong with them.

I like the way the Nissan CVT drives a lot better. I know it fails, expensively.

Maybe the Toyota CVT lasts longer... it could hardly be flimsier than the other one. But I've never really enjoyed driving Toyotas.
