re: Yellow lights need to last longer on 55 mph roads.

Almost all clearance intervals are developed based upon approach speed and the distance required to clear the intersection. The equations are followed very closely as miscalcs are the single quickest way to get people killed/injured involving at-grade intersections.....and plaintiffs attorneys hit that first.
On the slamming brakes, the issue is called the Dilemma Zone. It is an area where the yellow indication in shown and a car is at a point where it cannot stop within the time/space allocated. Engineering has come a long way to correct this and the advanced detection methods have helped tremendously. Still, DZs exist.
ETA: the clearance interval is not only yellow but All-Red indications. So, while you enter an intersection as it transitions to red, it will likely remain for 1-2 seconds on all approaches seeing a red ball.

Yellow means caution, not speed up.

I think maybe you just need to slow down

Morning rant, how dangerous is it to be going 55 and have a yellow light get you and you have to jam your brakes on to avoid running through a red light.
There are engineering studies done based on speed for traffic lights. You can find out the time required based on engineering study by contacting the DOT. Then you can go time the light yourself and see if it is within acceptance. If they programmed the light too short that goes against that engineering study, you can beat a ticket that way.
This does happen some places where they are trying to increase red light tickets to pay their budgets.

Am I the only one who doesn't slam on brakes for yellow lights? If it's close I just keep going. May want to knock on wood.
Maybe my hometown has sufficient timing, idk.

I don't ever see yellow lights. They're basically green to me.

In NO if they are connected to a traffic camera they are timed to ensure you get a ticket.

They need to blink the last few seconds

I don't slam on my brakes for yellow lights. If am far enough back I start breaking slowly to come to a smooth stop. If I'm too close to the intersection to where I'd have to slam hard as hell on on my brakes while simultaneously giving myself whiplash. frick that noise, Im flooring it through the light, even if I do slightly run a red light by a split second.

They are supposed to be, but setting them that way is wildly inconsistent.

They’re supposed to. I can tell you in Baton Rouge that’s not always accurate
