With X being down, I have realized how much of a habit I have of just clicking the app and mindlessly scrolling for information and sports news... but I can't stop trying to open the app even though I know it is down.

Any of you all struggled with relying to much on an app or limiting your usage?? X is where I typically get most of my news and live information so not really looking to delete it but god damn I got an addiction.

I open this website too much probably.

I kicked the habit of opening most apps on my phone mindlessly by just removing them from my home page.

Probably should choose a different news source than X.

I stopped using Twitter when it required you to create an account and sign in to perform searches.

I now rely on y'all to post links here - many thanks by the way.

I deleted it long before that, but you are right. I can understand wanting to get people to sign up so you can sell ads to companies, but signups aren't the end all be all. Overall views are REALLY want counts and the required sign up does nothing but reduce that number.

And this isn't just a X thing. Pretty much EVERY SM platform does it now. Since I don't have any of them (except SECRant), it makes it easier for me to ignore them.

News sources that use the least amount of adjectives/descriptors to describe a situation. Please pay attention to the word least

Here's an example from Reuters about Carney

quote:

OTTAWA, March 10 (Reuters) - Former central banker Mark Carney claimed a landslide victory on Sunday to lead Canada's Liberal Party and become its next prime minister, setting him up for a clash with the Trump administration. Liberal party members bet on Carney as the man best placed to take on U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened annexation as well as launching a trade war and punishing tariffs on the longtime ally. Liberal sources say Carney will soon call for a general election. "The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country ... if they succeed, they will destroy our way of life," Carney said in his acceptance speech late Sunday. Carney, who supports dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump's measures, could speak to Trump as early as Monday, Politico said. Carney, who has no political experience, is normally more reserved than Trudeau, who often had a combative relationship with Trump. The United States is due to slap a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum on Wednesday. Ottawa imposed a 25% tariff on C$30 billion worth of U.S. imports when Trump last month announced his initial tariff plans. "My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect," Carney said on Sunday. Trump's move triggered an angry backlash in Canada, where provinces pulled U.S. alcohol off the shelves and urged people to buy Canadian. Ontario, the most populous of the 10 provinces, is due to announce on Monday that it is imposing a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to New York, Michigan and Minnesota.

I've highlighted words that could serve as unnecessary descriptors. However, to anyone with half a brain, they aren't wrong. The victory was substantial. The tariffs are meant to punish. The backlash has been angry. Trudeau's relationship with Trump was often not friendly. I really only have an issue with slap, and admittedly that might be more of an editor preference as when you use the same word over and over, like "enforce", the article can read odd. Still, I'd rather not see the word slapped there as it implies violence where none took place.

This same article might be posted to Fox News, as Reuters typically sells their journalism to more mainstream news outlets with a lot of flowery language added in. Same goes for CNN, they just go the other way.

Admittedly, Reuters used to use almost no descriptors and has recently started adding in more unnecessary language. I am currently searching for an alternative 'just the facts' press.

While not entirely unbiased, it's leagues ahead of CNN, MSNBC, FOX, etc.

I gave up politics for lent which has decimated my X usage. You can't believe how literally freeing it is. What a toxic and vile landscape to disconnect from.
