Seems like a pretty easy business to set up. Buy a large refrigerator truck. Go around offer $.25 more a pound to farmers. Undercut the wholesalers by another $.25 a pound and make out like a bandit. Just gotta hope you don't get killed by some crawfish mafia for stepping in on their turf.

The farmers would never sell to you. There are some unwritten rules that they follow.

So you are telling me all these farmers that "are barely making end meet" wouldn't jump at the opportunity of turning more profit?

So the guy in that truck typically has a mark up of .50. You overpaid by .25 to the farmer and then sold to the restaurant for .25 less than the other wholesalers. Zero profit for the day, very productive

Have you ever tried to buy from a fisherman in the basin? It is what I imagine what a drug deal would be like. If you get one to agree to sell you a sack it is done on the down low. Almost like thye are under contract to the wholesaler.

Can you guarantee to move the volume that the big wholesalers move? If not, farmers are selling to you. These wholesalers supply the largest markets…. Houston, New Orleans, Dallas, etc

Farmers don’t set their price they want?

Retailers don’t set the price they want to sell to customers?

It's because alot are restraunts. You can't boil crawfish for the public if you can't lock in a fisherman. It's basically a contract.
