How about the P-39 Aircobra? A mid-engine fighter we loaned to the Russians. It had a cannon in the nose and 6 machine guns.

It's high altitude performance was poor. That's why we gave most of them to the Russians. The Russians used them at low level quite effectively though against the Germans.

Like many, George Gay cut his time short at A&M to fight the enemy during WWII. Gig 'em.
There are many gays at A&M now to make up for his lost time there.

And they probably are gigging each other like y'all "brag" about to the rest of the world.

Here's some now-

Why? Money.

They decided to leave out the more expensive two-stage supercharger in favor of the single-stage, cheaper unit.

Ensign George Gay.

A friend of mine was in a bookstore in Shreveport several years ago. He noticed an older man sitting by himself at a table with a stack of books. It was George Gay. He had written a book and was doing a book signing that wasn't well publicized, which was sad, but my friend went up and spoke to him, and they ended up talking for an hour and a half.

certainly by the beginning of '45 we had pretty strong air superiority.

We had air superiority by spring of '44. As soon as Doolittle allowed our Mustangs to go on sweeps for enemy fighters rather than sticking close to our bombers the Luftwaffe began to get decimated.

Flying simulators and mods for the past couple decades, especially IL2

I just knocked the dust off IL-2 a few weeks ago. This is by far the greatest sim ever made and it never gets old. It's amazing what it takes to just fly, let alone accomplish missions.

This stuff is just awesome:

No I apologize, I intentionally mentioned a plane that was designed and built in the sixties if I'm not mistaken. A little jet that never saw combat we ith our military but was quite popular around the world. I'm not sure why we found it unsuitable as it was an agile plane supposedly a joy to fly

The designation was the F-20 and it was a fine plane comparable to the F-16. It had a higher climb rate, higher ceiling and a higher thrust to weight ratio. After that it is all F-16. In the hands of the right pilot the F-20 would more than hold it's own against as NY fighter of that era. Except maybe the F-15
