I remember growing up we'd get booms pretty regularly maybe once a month or so and you'd get them a few hours apart. The first was the SR-71 outbound to Cuba. The second was the SR-71 heading back to Edwards. The double crack was unmistakable.

Similar experience watching a big meteor shower in Bush, LA (away from light pollution) back in the 90s. The meteor was a largish green fireball that appeared to be so close that it was alarming, but was probably miles up. If it was as close as it looked we'd have heard the impact.

My buddy and I used to stay up all night drinking whiskey during the big one in November every year. We had one that looked like it was barely moving because of the angle it was coming in at, but it was green, had a thick contrail, and we could hear it crackling.
Or it might have been the whiskey. But I don't think it was the whiskey.
ETA: It was the Leonids. We'd hang out and watch that one because with everyone's kids and family stuff between November and January, we didn't get much whiskey man talk time.

FYI, the base in Belle Chasse has 6 F-35s stationed there temporarily
