So Italy has more CV deaths than China?

Yes, they passed them today. If you believe the Chinese numbers.

Japanese are notorious for wearing masks. They don't hug and kiss each other. Other Asian countries know the Chinese and have been fricked by their shite corona outbreaks in the past. They were ready.

They have a huge Chinese population that work in their textile industry. Chinese that are from Wuhan and traveled there during the lunar new year. They didn't shut down travel fast enough and most returned back.

Add to all this a general incompetence and inability to do things efficiently or correctly.

This. If anyone has spent anytime in Italy you know this is part of it. It is amazing that they have an economy at all.

That's not what the data shows. Also, we're a hellofalot more spread out and distant just to start off. Add in cancelling life and I believe we're going to not see anything at all like this.

Italy is an anomaly. When you look at the numbers from every country it just stands out by far.

Actually, you are wrong. The US has been rapidly climbing the rankings of both overall COVID cases and number of new cases per day. Not very long ago, the US had about 10% of the new daily cases as Italy. Today the US is up to about 50% the number of daily cases as Italy.

The US has moved up to 6th in overall number of cases and 4th in number of new cases per day. Unfortunately, we will continue to climb these rankings even if it takes some time to catch Italy. US should surpass Germany by tomorrow at the latest into 3rd for number of new cases per day and Spain into 2nd not long after that.

The US is one of the few countries with more deaths than totally recovered cases, in large part because the disease lagged in arriving here as compared to the rest of the world - meaning people haven't had enough time to fully recover.

Older population as well. Still, it’s extremely odd. I’m just guessing but I bet there is a genetic predisposition as well as broad Scope of early exposures.

Now WTF is wrong with NYC?!? Cases doubled overnight.

If it doubles again tomorrow, and doubles again after that, BOOM we're now Italy.

That’s because we are testing. How many of those people are critical? How many actually need hospitalization?

Overall numbers don't mean jack shite unless you compare pop size. Also we are testing more and more people everyday so cases will keep climbing but the mortality rate will keep dropping

It's an Italian tradition to cough and spit on each other. Kind of odd but it's the way of the old world.

Allowing 200,000 illegal Chinese to work in your fashion industry sweat shops, and go home for Chinese new Year was probably a bad idea

Japan is one of the most sterile countries in the world. It is drastically different than Italy.

It's 60 million people in a country the size of Michigan. You do the math to figure out the population density.

This type of disease will run rampant in a country like Italy.

They have high percentage of elderly-23% of population. They also smoke at higher rate than Americans

Food for thought - Japan has twice the population (126M vs. 60M) in about 1/3 more area, a greater percentage of elderly (30% > 60 yrs old), and they also are heavy smokers.

Yet they only have 924 confirmed cases versus 41,000 for Italy.

What are they doing different? Went on lockdown earlier, not as much contact with Chinese mainlanders?

ETA: Disregard - topic was already discussed as I was researching/typing.
