Writing a check for a roof right now.

Yes, I know it is trashy to have a roof or replace it.
And I know I am cheap for using shingles unlike the baws here who crust there roofs with diamonds.
It is one of those expenses that costs a lot but you get absolutely no fun out of the purchase (Other than not having a leaking roof.)
The joys of home ownership are sometimes just like the joys of passing a kidney stone.

Did you have damage to the roof from hail or something?
Did you go through your insurance?
If you have a good roofing company that knows the ropes, you shouldn't have to write out a dime's worth of your own money on a new roof.

I usually just wait until after hailstorms. A deductible is a lot easier to pay than the whole roof.

Replacing a house with 2 ACs is the single biggest expense a homeowner will have to pay. Consider yourself lucky it was only a roof

Just an old roof that is time to go. I bought and renovated this house after Katrina and put off the roof which is probably over 30 or 40 years old.

That's why you go to a job site, find the Mexican that speaks English and get him to bid labor while you buy the material. You could have turned that 13k check into a 5k check.

Oh, I tried. They refused. I kept waiting and waiting for a hail storm that never came and after the third roof leak I had to break down and pay out of pocket.
And my uncle is our insurance agent and he went to bat for us, and still nothing.
