Showing the 50 eggs scene to my classes today and they’re acting like it’s the weirdest, oddest thing they’ve ever seem. I’m trying to help them understand the Greasers in the book The Outsiders and how the main character wants to be like Paul Newman. Can’t understand Paul Newman without actually watching some Paul Newman.
After watching the scene and asking them about elements of toughness displayed by Paul Newman, all they can do is wonder why I would show them something gross like a guy eating 50 eggs. I gave them the background and context of the scene and everything.

It sounds to me like what you have in your classroom is a failure to communicate.

Hah. True.
And I forgot about that scene and have been telling each class to go home and watch the movie. I’m sure some mamas will be emailing me about that.

Y'all should discuss his anti social tendencies.
Great movie... the cast alone is one of the great ones.

Dragline: Nothin'! A handful of nothin'. You stupid mullet head, he beat you with nothin', just like today when he kept comin' back at me, with nothin'.
Luke: Yeah, well... sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it... well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

Several of that supporting cast went on to be pretty big stars. Dennis Hopper, Wayne Rogers, Ralph Waite, Harry Dean Stanton.
One of the most interesting actors was Luke Askew, Boss Paul. He was a law school graduate and former Air Force intelligence officer. He also worked with Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider and John Wayne in The Green Berets, and was a friend of Bob Dylan.

You picked the wrong scene. The fight scene shows a man willing to engage in a fight he already knows he has no chance of winning, but instead of accepting defeat, Luke gets up every time he is knocked down. He continues to persevere to the extent that those giddy with bloodlust in anticipation of the fight, turn and walk away, after pleading with him to stay down in order to avoid more punishment. Eventually, even Dragline, the meathead administering the beating no longer wants to brutalize Luke, and carries him off to be cared for. That's toughness.

We watched this in 8th grade English class (1989ish) as an example of symbolism used in movies, namely the depiction of Luke as a symbolic Jesus in this case.
Our class thoroughly enjoyed the movie and it was the first time as a kid I actually paid close attention to the direction, scenes, characters, and dialogue searching for that "deeper meaning". Great classroom experience.
I think the kids would love it if you were to show the entire movie in class.
