re: Would you send your kid 30 minutes from your house for HS?

Really depends on the kid. I was sent to a private school about 30 minutes away. I was always an extremely introverted person and while I did make some friends through playing sports, I never felt like I truly fit in. At the same time I lost touch with most of the local kids I grew up with and felt out of the loop anytime I was around them.

This is our main concern with not sending her to the local private school. Which to agree with the earlier post, she probably will not be friends with many, if any of these kids post HS.

for HS?by Tommy NobleA family member of mine in mandeville sent both his kids to Jesuit. I thought it was a little much with St. Paul’s being right there
That just depends on what you think is more important: your son’s development, education, and future or a couple extra minutes to yourself because you don’t have to drive as far.

This. Bus ran at 6:30 when I was a kid.

We did it. Both are at LSU now.

My best friend's kid goes to HS in Spain. He's an exceptional kid, but I don't think I could ever do that.
30 min. away wouldn't be so bad, but another continent would be a no from me.

I grew up in the country. I was the second on the bus and rode that thing for 90 minutes or so. Was excited when I started driving and it only took 35 minutes to get to school on a good day.

Where I grew up, that was the only option for a lot of kids.

I see you never grew up in a rural area.

If the school you're sending her to is higher rigor, she will likely be pretty resilient and make friends there. We have a massive school district here in Louisville/Jefferson and it's not unusual for kids to go to school across the county and they do fine socially in that regard.

That’s fair, but I also don’t think St. Paul’s is a significant downgrade from Jesuit knowing numerous people from both schools. My cousin who I’m talking about also lived right near the causeway, so that helped.

I did it. Was no big deal. Lived in NW Indiana and drove into Chicago every day for HS. The minute I turned 16 my dad was like "here's your license, here's a car. Godspeed."

I did, the main emphasis here is not the time per se, it is the fact that my kid wouldn't know anyone going in to the school. The drive itself is not a huge factor.

I live by Woodlawn. Daughter goes to Baton Rouge High. She rides the bus about thirty every day. I grew up in Zachary and went to Istrouma Middle. Road 1:10 every morning and afternoon.

I went to high school 45 minutes away. Specifically for sports

My step kids go to school 45 min from our home bc their dad’s area of town has a better school district. Not a big deal, they’ll make friends and have new experiences.

We live a block from my son’s high school, it’s awesome….

My parents did that for me back in the late 70’s when EBRP schools began forced bussing, and had me going to the complete opposite side of the universe to attend school, and the school was absolute garbage, built on a landfill, and hated every one of us who were bussed in there as much as we hated having to be bussed there.
I remain forever grateful for my parents sacrifice for me, and I made great friends who I am still good friends with to this day as well as found myself around good kids with good parents that saved me from a soul sucking public school existence. The difference from one environment to the other was night and day. One was focused on basic surviving the day, and the other actual school work.
So yeah, if it is going to be a real positive for your kid in environment and education, it’s going to literally affect the rest of their lives, and it’s the best thing you could ever give your kids is a decent childhood for them to begin building the rest of their lives on.

just wondering if anyone has done something similar.
