Whichever has the moonshiners.

I would just want to hang out with them.

Family spent a lot of time in the Rockies so the sentimental hook is there, but if I have to live somewhere forever I'm choosing the Smokies.

The Rockies have better scenery, better weather, more public lands, more geographical diversity.

The Smokies have better cities, better people, better culture, more flora and fauna diversity.

Both have all the outdoor recreation opportunities you could ever want unless you want to ski.

If money was no object it would be hard not to choose the Rockies.

If money is an object then I would choose to live near the Smokies and vacation in the Rockies once a year.

Smokies for me. Keeps me close to my family and loved ones. Less liberal states as well.

Rockies are more spectacular by far but the logistics are tougher and the winters are brutal. Access to anything more than basic amenities requires a half day or more drive or living in one of the cities, which kinda defeats the purpose IMV.

A friend of mine bought some acreage near Hamilton, MT with the intention of eventually moving. After spending a few summers there she concluded it wasn't practical to live there full time and sold it.

The Rockies are spectacular. They also are high and lack oxygen and don't store enough water to sustain the growth that wants to be there. If anything, they are mountains for young people who are bike, downhill skiing, rough terrain hiking sorts and who will fit right in and make fun of people who are less outdoor-active-oriented.
Winters that can last seven months can get old and hail storms that destroy roofs and car body work also happen.
The Smokies are more user friendly. Seasons happen. Winters don't freeze many people to death. Weeds get pulled from gardens, rather than support a growing industry of mellows. Sunsets are better. (A good friend moved to Boulder and I helped her move. The sun left her patio before she got home from work, but didn't set for two + more hours because the mountains shaded them out. )

The Appalachians have more roads so you can get 'there'. The Rockies have a lot fewer roads over a larger area. There's a lot more problems of You can't get there from here out west, even if you are part mountain goat with a powerful mountain bike.

Yes, that’s just the Rockies I grew up going to with my family. It’s no longer the wonderful place it used to be where I have so many memories.

I've been to the Smokies, Ozarks and Rockies several times each on my motorcycle and prefer the Rockies.

The Smokies and Ozarks have a lot of very twisty roads running through them and they require a rider to pay close attention since straightaways are few and far between.

The Rockies allow me to ride at a good clip and still be able to take in the sights with their gentle curves, even at altitude since the mountains are so much bigger.

I've been in the Rockies in the summer months and it's still very comfortable. The last time I was there I left on Labor Day from the Durango area and it was 38 degrees when I hit the first station to fill up my bike to head back to La. By the end of the first days ride, it had hit 108 rolling across N. Texas.

I grew up closer to the Rockies and spent most of my summers in Utah so I have a bit of a nostalgic attachment to them but as someone who grew up in the western US the greenery and amazing variety of life in the Smokies is magical as is the history and abundance of historic places. Only drawback is the amount of people.

Been up here in Red Lodge, Montana over 10 years. The winters have finally gotten to me. Drove through Yellowstone today...booger eaters everywhere. I'm over it. I'm headed back south in a few years.

Don't limit the location. Sierra Nevadas are every bit as spectacular as the Rockies, especially from the eastern side. If politics are the deciding factor then eastern Tennesse every day. PoliticL board?
