Amarillo is kind of cool.
Except for the permanent cow fecal matter saturating the air there. Only place I’ve been where I literally felt like I was eating shite.

Madison, and it isn't close. I moved from Madison to Midland, for about a year, and it sucked. Once my wife got pregnant, we moved back to Madison/Ridgeland. I prefer the smaller town feel, exceptional hunting and fishing, without having to leave the county and outstanding public schools. That said, it's home for me, or has been for the majority of the last 25 years.

I moved from Madison to Midland
We're supposed to believe this was a coincidence?

LOL, well, my roommate did the same thing. Finished college, took a job with Baker Hughes as a wireline engineer, now both of us are back in Madison. He's with Ergon, I'm offshore. I happen two know two other's that did it as well, all from the same H.S. graduating class at Madison Central. So, the probability may be a little higher than you anticipated.

There is no reason to live in Midland unless you own an oil company. Even those guys have a house in Dallas.

Madison, MS
I had dealings in both areas.
Madison is a very nice community which has taken a lot of measures to withstand the influences of its close proximity to Jackson.
Very wealthy area and people are happy to pay for their safe and cozy community.
It has some of the highest standards for commercial construction in the South and they do not put up with BS.
On the crime front, thugs know not to get into any sort of trouble there because the whole system will clobber them at every opportunity. This is not a racial thing, but an anti-criminal thing. Whatever it is that bad guys want to do, they avoid doing it anywhere near Madison. The word is well known on the streets that messing up in Madison is a terrible idea.
Nice place.
It also is beside a very nice reservoir and the Natchez Trace.
Numerous good places to eat and enjoy an adult beverage, but never drive under the influence there. They do not play that game either.

Madison, especially if you can afford to live on the Ross Barnett
Back in the early 70's I lived and worked at a marina on the Ross Barnett.
It was called "The Old Trace Marina". It was located adjacent to the Jackson Yacht Club and the last time I was up that way I saw all that land had been developed into some very nice homesites.
When I worked at that marina just about all that land in that area was nothing but woods and I'd often ride my trail bike all through that area. Now, it's built up and full of very nice homes
It had been over 40 years since I had been in that area and told my wife I couldn't believe how much it had changed. When I live up there, County Line Rd. was nothing more than a 2 lane country road that went from the interstate toward the reservoir and the first one you'd hit was called Main Harbor.

Midland is a long way from a decent beach, plus I like having green lawns and deep woods nearby. So Madison.

Madison. It's a nice place and proximal to nicer places.
Midland is remote.

Having lived in both. There is no comparison. Madison is the only correct answer. In Midland, you are just in the middle of nowhere, no trees, dry, dusty, expensive as hell. In Madison, its a well thought out town, lakes, rivers and easier to visit other places.

I’m really not a big fan of the way Texas is going

I’ll take no overhead power lines and no billboards for a 100 .

Madison used to have a buffer from Jackson in Ridgeland, but Ridgeland has gone downhill. NorthPark Mall was a very nice place to go but the whole County Line Rd area is now just Jackson North. Madison Police and Madison SO do a great job of keeping it crime free for the most part though and every building has to be brick. One of the only Wal-Marts in the country that is completely red bricked.
Midland is hot and dusty.

The Texas cities are slowly becoming mini NYCs.
They are bringing in a shite ton of people from other states and even countries.
The governors main focus seems to be bringing in more corporations and giving them tax breaks.
Meanwhile housing is going up and land prices are rising to be more than other states with more fertile land. Which just doesn’t even make sense. And that’s for the most rural land in the state.
What Texas really has over Mississippi is the scenery in some parts of the state. Hill country, mountains in west Texas.
