Hanging how it’s done in the Wild West is meant to snap your neck, not strangle you. I think the hanging in hung, drawn, and quartered is meant to strangle.

The common criminals who were straight out hung would have family and friends hang on the legs to speed things up.

Why not?
What would be fatal in cutting the ribs away and long as you didn't get into the vital organs?

The back would be cut open and the ribs hacked away to expose the lungs. I suppose it worked, although it’s hard to imagine anyone would stay alive, or at least stay conscious, long after the back and rib opening due to shock and blood loss.
