It is probably better to hold the kid until the person explains why they left them unattended.

fricking Judge Dredd over here. "Tell me why you left the kid and maybe you'll get it back". I like your style.

Was in a parking lot and a little girl got away from her mother who was loading a toddler in her car. The little girl ran past me in the lot by me towards a car backing out of a parking spot...I grabbed her because the lady backing out in the car did not see her. The mother ran towards me, hugged me and thanked me for grabbing her daughter...said if it was not for me, she would had been hit. Have to say, it kind of shook me up.

For some weird reason parents either love you or fricking hate you for saving their kid.

I snagged a little person before she got ran over at Walmart and they tried to buy me a gift certificate.

You did the right thing of course. There are 3 rules for interacting with other peoples' kids:
• Never physically touch another person's child (your situation of course demanded it, but under normal circumstances...)
• Never EVER allow yourself yo be in a situation where you're alone with another person's child (always have a third person, preferably an adult, with you)
Never make any comments about another person's child's looks or physical development--nothing more than "nice haircut."

What about something harmless, like, "Hey - those tits are coming in nicely! I bet the boys are starting to notice you!"

What kind of grandpa was he? Was he a big old guy with farm hands who looked like he could acquit himself well if need be? Check his knuckles....did you? Or was he the old hunched over and slow moving kind? Do you feel like you could have beaten his arse if you refused to give the girl back on demand?

I know you were not trying to kidnap her or anything like or even make it seem that way but I feel there should have been some sort of standoff with the girls release in question. At least make him go through the mental exercise of what he would do if you were a legit kidnapper who was holding his granddaughter and wouldn't let go. Sometimes you have to teach people a lesson by putting them in a real life situation.
