So a family with 3 EVs heading from Texas to Florida for their yearly beach trip. Your solution is that they stop every 200 miles and wait for AT A MINIMUM an hour and a half for all three vehicles to charge

30 min per vehicle.... which is what this car, the thread is based of, claims...

The environmental costs of batteries are real but overblown. Unlike petrol fueled vehicles, the battery is not "consumed" by way of use. So at the end of its lifespan, the lithium, nickel, cobalt, etc. will be recycled into a new battery.

By contrast, a 25mpg car will consume 52,000 pounds of fuel over 200,000 miles. This excludes energy to extract, transport, and refine the fuel.

Most folks have multiple cars.

IMO, the Bolt is the most logical EV for commuters that don’t often take road trips beyond 300-350 miles.

The Bolt is basically a commuter car. And it’s a good price for people who want that.

We're talking about charging your car at home, and dudes are saying you can't do that right now at all, but you obviously can because they are rolling blackouts, so no it couldn't be any less like the comparison you made.

We have rolling blackouts now without people charging their vehicles at home, it will only get worse.

The EV doesn't have to be all things to all people to be viable.

People in this thread worry way too much about what other people are driving. Probably the same people who start threads about what other dudes are wearing.

Do you have a reasonable commute and want to lower your reliance on fossil fuels, reduce repair costs, or like being an early adopter? Look into an EV.

Do you have a long commute, like having long range truck, or take several 300+ mile trips? Stay with gas or diesel.

The reality is that for some people, plugging a car in at night is a great convenience and they aren't impacted by the range. And outside of CA the energy grid is pretty damn reliable. Even in CA I doubt a rolling blackout has a big impact on an overnight charge.

And if you aren't poor you can consider both.

Ahhhh, so you guys take the OP and also make generalized opinions on EVs as a whole(which you 100% have) but then want to call me out when I do the same.

Got it. Good luck with this thread, don't let your bias get in the way.

Yes. A single task car.

Like a Jeep Wrangler. Or Honda Fit. Or Chevy Corvette.

You don’t see people towing an RV with a Porsche. Yet they still buy them.

Using an EV as a long distance cruiser is just as dumb as using Jeep as a commuter vehicle.

Nope. I’m talking about this particular vehicle.

What bias would that be? Tesla’s are fine cars. Evs just aren’t practical for most people.

If you can afford an extra “commuter only” car then yea, they are wonderful for that. The hyper vast majority of the US population isn’t in that position to own 2 vehicles, which makes the push for EVs to the masses dumb.

It can also use public rapid charging network for a much faster charge (100 miles of charge in 30 minutes).

Stopping for even 30 minutes every 100 miles is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of for a road trip.

I stop twice in 1,100 miles usually. Once if I have a good tail wind.

I use my wrangler for commute. Travel. Off roading. Camping.

That is a far cry from a single task car buddy

Yes, people with the means buy LUXURY items. A second, commuter car, to many, is a LUXURY ITEM.

It has a 260 mile range. Why stop every 100 miles to charge?

Traded in a Nissan Armada for a Bolt 3 years ago. Bolt is the best car we’ve ever owned. The wife drives the Bolt, I drive her old Chevy Volt.

We downloaded the OnStar trip information from my wife’s (no pics) car over a period of 18 months and saw that there was 2 trips in that period that were over 200 miles, and those two were something we could plan ahead. So, from a range anxiety standpoint, 250 mike range was fine.

For long trips ( family trip from Delaware to FL) we rent something big. Usually once or twice a year.

Electric bill is about $60 per month more pre Bolt. We plug in nightly.

GM has really nailed their battery construction - they degrade minimally over time. They have a sophisticated heating and cooling system for the battery. Barring a weird mechanical issue, battery failure with a Bolt is a non issue.

If your use case fits the Bolt, it’s an outstanding car. If you drive 300 miles a day, tow and haul a lot, not so much.

Can’t afford a $20 donation to charity?
