K-2 has a 25% death rate.

Reaching the third highest peak rated the most difficult climb doesn't have the same ring to it.
And this is why Everest is now a tourist attraction. The Canadian women that died a couple of seasons ago that caused such a stir. Do you know how she trained for Everest? She climbed fricking stairs. She'd never set foot on a mountain before. Everest is now the place that idiots go to die. It's sad.

True of most of the high mountains. They expend all of their energy getting to the top.

Of course i would....it's not K2.
Seriously, you cant just ask a question like this because it is such a physically demanding ordeal that very few COULD do it. Its not a question of WOULD. You have to phrase it as if you COULD climb everest, WOULD you? Its almost like asking would you be an NFL linebacker or would you be pro guitar player or pro bodybuilder. Very few people on Earth COULD do any of that. Your question is insulting to people that could do it.

Give it another decade, and Everest will be nothing but frozen bodies, feces, and litter. It seems like the only reason this continues is the income for the Sherpa would dry up without it. I'm no climber, but from the little I've read in the news, the whole situation over there seems like it's heading for trouble.

There should be a vetting process- you must have climbed certain other peaks before being allowed to try Everest. And, it should be "pack it in, pack it out."

Most deaths and accidents happen on the descent no matter what the rating of the mountain is. Climbers get tired, complacent, and lose focus thinking the summit was the end goal.

Exactly. A lot of people can't climb Everest or perish on it simply because their bodies can't acclimatize correctly. It's a very physically and mentally demanding thing to do.

This is how it works in the climbing clubs. When climbs are put in for you typically have to include your resume unless you are a known quantity.

Very sad....you can't just throw crampons on and be used to it and now....oh yeah, I'm on fricking Everest.

I'd get 65000 singles and head to the titty bar instead

High altitude isn't my thing but If it were, I'd climb K-2 before Everest. Far more challenging and less crowded.

Might be the most physically challenging feat on Earth.
No way. K2 is a climb, Evest is a hike.

Taking a trip for six months to get in the rhythm of it. It feels like you can go on forever doing that. Climbing Everest is the ultimate and the opposite of that. Because you get these high powered plastic surgeons and CEO's, they pay $80,000 and have sherpas put the ladders in place and 8000 feet of fixed ropes and you get to the camp and you don't even have to lay out your sleeping bag. It's already laid out with a chocolate mint on the top. The whole purpose of planning something like Everest is to effect some sort of spiritual and physical gain and if you compromise the process, you're an a-hole when you start out and you're an a-hole when you get back.

This. The Summit pretty thoroughly tells you why K2 is way more of a challenge. And why it kills way more people than Everest.
