Would you change the transmission fluid for the first time on a car with 117,000 miles?

I bought a car that has 117,000 miles and and I have no clue if the two previous owners ever changed the transmission fluid. Would you take a chance on it or leave it alone?

You're going to get different opinions by everyone but I would feel fine changing it and the filter.

You can change but do not flush the transmission, which could be recommended by some mechanics. Flushing could possibly loosen very small metal pieces in the transmission and could cause problems.

Only use the exact fluid that Toyota recommends in the owners manual DO NOT USE a FLUID THAT EXCEEDS requirement go to the stealership and get the exact fluid in the manual.

I have a 2010 Avalon with 270000. Never changed the transmission fluid. It is starting to slip, maybe I should change it soon.

My tacoma is on 211,000 miles. Original fluid.

I changed all the fluids, spark plugs, ignition coils, and got new tires. The transmission fluid was the only thing I am hesitant about.

I recommend contacting a good mechanic, unless you are really good with this stuff - just to double make sure you use the right fluid, right amount etc. I hear horror stories about damage done by changes that are more like flushes.
In this video by Scotty Kilmer, he shows there are two pieces you have to remove on a Toyota transmission in order to drain a decent amount of fluid. I would have never known that. Hence my recommendation to go to a mechanic and see what he says. Your transmission may not be the same however. Kilmer youtube go to 2:30 to see the two piece part
Kilmer says do not flush.

You didn't get rid of the ultra reliable long lasting OEM Denso ignition coils for some cheap shitty aftermarket ignition coils did you?

No, I got the OEM parts from Team Toyota. I watch a lot of videos from Car Care Nut on YouTube who used to be a Toyota specialist for many years.

Hearing you and others have many miles on your Toyota cars without ever changing the transmission fluid is very satisfying to hear!

The key is being smooth on the accelerator. People that stomp on the gas and brake a lot will wear out the transmission faster. The worst thing I’ve ever seen though is people coasting backwards and throwing the vehicle into drive before coming to a stop.
That’s a quick way to grinding the transmission up.
One other tip: if you park on an incline. Press and hold brake. Then put vehicle in neutral. Then set emergency brake. Then, put the vehicle in park.
