Would bringing back public punishment for criminals decrease the crime rate?

I know public execution or punishment is a bit archaic, but you would have to think if criminals were humiliated in a public setting it would have an effect on people’s mentality. If someone is a big enough a-hole like that 15 year old in BR to break into an elderly woman’s home and shoot her or go into a church and murder the congregation then they at least deserve to be tarred and feathered. This sort of humiliation would be a better deterrent to bad behavior imo.
I know of course this would never happen but something has to be done because the idea of going to prison is obviously welcomed by a lot of these idiots.

We need to bring back the gladiatorial games and pit lifers/death row inmates against each other for our entertainment.
Give the winner a couple extra ramen noodle cups for their troubles.

Need public hanging in the town square.
And public torture for pedophiles

It didnt back in the day. Pickpocketing was a capital offense in 18th Century England, yet pickpockets worked the crowds at public executions.

Good use for tiger stadium during the off season.

This is why I've always found arguments like the OP's to be so silly. We've had times of lax laws, we've had times of utterly draconian laws, and yet, I've seen no evidence that crime rates have been significantly affected. Reminds me of tax receipts: no matter how high or low we set the income tax rate, what we collect in taxes stays about the same.

Well, One can argue that hanged men have lower recidivism rates

Each state gets to have so many (fixed number) beds on death row. Each time someone is awarded the death penalty, the guy in the oldest slot toddles off to the guillotine (pay per view, more in color, cheaper view in black and white).
After he toddles off, everybody moves to the next room. So at all times, each knows how many death penalties he or she is from the blade.
I am serious about the guillotine. None of this too harsh chemicals or that stuff. Just a simple button, pushed by five people to release it and one of the buttons is not connected.

Right but you also have to take into account the factor of social media that would play a role in today’s world and didn’t back in the days of the draconian type laws

No one would pay. I don’t think you realize how uneventful the guillotine is. It’s over in the blink of an eye.

While true, the rate of recidivism among old men isn't much higher.
One thing that has seemed to hold true over the years: the more severe the punishment for low level crimes, violent crimes become more frequent. It's almost like treating non-violent and violent crimes the same means that people are more likely to commit a violent crime to cover up a non-violent crime to avoid getting caught...

I can agree with this. The system we have obviously doesn’t work.

I think it could work for minor offenses (graffiti, drunken bar fights, etc), maybe even B&E but not so much for rape or murder.
What really needs to happen is more patrols in the high-crime areas as well as things like a half-dozen cops just hanging out in front of known drug dens and/or gang hangouts. When they move, the cops move. Keep that shite up until they frick up and attack the cops then throw the book at them.

Cutting the hands off of thieves would work for me.
