I drink 4 drinks a day. I consider myself an alcoholic because I have to have them every evening. Even when I say I want to have only one, I drink the 3-4 drinks. Now I still workout , manage my kids, and nobody would think I’m an alcoholic. But I am. And I’m trying to improve.
I think the definition of an alcoholic is up to the individual.

Alcoholism is a medical condition with a qualifying threshold. 42 beers per week most certainly exceeds that threshold. This isn’t a matter of opinion or not. The opinion in this situation would be “Is my friend a functional alcoholic or nonfunctional alcoholic?”

Would a six-pack every night be considered an alcoholic?
Not really, but it'd be an expensive habit for sure.
Beer has very little ABV- an entire six pack is like a bottle wine in terms of abv and three shots of whiskey. The amount of non-alcohol in beer is way better for your liver than those three shots though.

That’s not the way it works. Being deemed an alcoholic is more about consequences than it is liquid or beverage intake. Specifically whether the drinking negatively impacts one’s life on a regular basis.
That's true. If you lose a job, lose relationships, get in legal trouble, screw things up because of drinking is when it's deemed alcoholism. Now many doctors and specialists like to put a number on it because it's easier and quicker to just say "Oh four drinks 5 out of 7 days or something like 21 drinks a week makes you an alcoholic". Seriously you will find people who say 21 drinks a week means you're an alcoholic.

I would define myself as an alcoholic who recognizes my issues with alcohol and can force myself to have only maybe 4 or 5 drinks a month without going farther.
You're not an alcoholic.

It's pretty easy to tell who on this board has no experience with alcoholism, and I'm honestly shocked by that considering this is TD
True alcoholics quickly get to the point where they are drinking all day everyday; to the point where it affects every job, every relationship and every decision you make.
My father was drinking a fifth of vodka and a 1.5L bottle of wine daily for reference to an actual alcoholic. If someone does a six pack nightly, and it doesn't escalate beyond that, he's not an alcoholic

This is from the Mayo Clinic. Says nothing about quantity.

Alcohol use disorder can be mild, moderate or severe, based on the number of symptoms you experience. Signs and symptoms may include:
Being unable to limit the amount of alcohol you drink
Wanting to cut down on how much you drink or making unsuccessful attempts to do so
Spending a lot of time drinking, getting alcohol or recovering from alcohol use
Feeling a strong craving or urge to drink alcohol
Failing to fulfill major obligations at work, school or home due to repeated alcohol use
Continuing to drink alcohol even though you know it's causing physical, social, work or relationship problems
Giving up or reducing social and work activities and hobbies to use alcohol
Using alcohol in situations where it's not safe, such as when driving or swimming
Developing a tolerance to alcohol so you need more to feel its effect or you have a reduced effect from the same amount
Experiencing withdrawal symptoms — such as nausea, sweating and shaking — when you don't drink, or drinking to avoid these symptoms

Is it followed with fifth of vodka and sporadic early morning sips to keep shakes away?

My daddy would come home with a six pack after work every evening and drink it while he did his regular shite in the evening. 30 mins after his last one he went to bed. If he ever got drunk he hide it well.

Being an alcoholic doesn’t require someone to lose all bodily function and cognition.
“Functioning alcoholic” is definitely where a six pack a day COULD fall.

This sets up my question. What happens when (if he can??) he takes a night off?
