America is pretty well isolated from the world. Spanish is just about the only language that I might say would be relevant to the life of the average US citizen.
On the other hand, Europe is filled with countries smallers than some US states which speak different languages from one another. Imagine if Louisiana spoke French, MS spoke English and Arkansas spoke German. This combined with how easy it is to move around freely through EU member nations and you just run into a wider variety of people.
Then again you also have a lot of foreignerso learning English because the US/UK is as influential as it is on the world stage. No one cares what is going g on in Sweden but other countries spend a disproportionate amount of time would during what is going on with us.
