Oil Price Shock Fuels 35% Surge in Global EV Sales

Following a subdued start to the year, sales of electric vehicles (EVs) jumped in the second quarter after the Middle East crisis slashed crude supply and hiked oil and fuel prices, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report on Thursday.

However, EV sales rebounded sharply in the second quarter, rising by 35% compared with the first quarter “as the energy crisis sparked by the war in the Middle East brought fuel price volatility back into sharp focus,” the IEA said.

set to boost electric car sales to a 29% share of total car sales worldwide in 2026, one percentage point higher than the 28% IEA expected in the Global EV Outlook 2026 in May

I think everyone missed my point. People panic buy for no reason at all. Toilet paper and eggs.

Just bought a Sportage Hybrid (HEV) for wife 2 days ago. It's much quicker than the gas - that was the main reason. Mileage is obviously better. After a lot of thought we're convinced it was the best choice.

No oil changes. No brake jobs. No gas stations. EVs are the shite and the haters just haven’t caught up yet.

Has Zero to do with energy prices. Chinese companies have nearly 8M units more capacity than they have customers for something like 129 makes (down from ~500 at one point) of EVs, so they are dumping them worldwide at ridiculously low prices.

Their market shares have seen three digit growth in unprotected markets worldwide because of the pricing. The shakeout of OEMs there has already begun, with one company that had sold around 500k worldwide going under just this month. Guess all the things that don't work in an EV when the OEM goes under? Almost everything........

Probably the worst signal for them is that the CCP did not include "New Energy Vehicles", ie, EVs, in its 2026-2030 five year plan. All of those companies are in sell or die mode now.

FTR, my next car will likely be a Tesla, and I bought a PHEV over 13 years ago, so I am hardly anti-EV.

I don't understand the panic purchases. Oil goes up, it goes down... They buy an EV and the second the charger plug freezes into their car while it charges... during a cold winter night, they will be trading it in for something that runs on gas..

You know how your car battery charges while your vehicle is running? It would take something like that for EVs to stabilize its sells.

I have an electric wheelchair, that on average I charge every other night. Every once in awhile I forget to charge it. In those situations I just have to be mindful of how much I use it. And turn it off when I am stationary, etc.. The only time a battery left me hanging was one time going down the levee.. In an spot that was a little more steep than other areas and it tripped a fuse, but when I forget to charge it I always think "imagine if that was a car". You get up, get ready and when you are leaving you realize you can't make it 2 miles down the road because plugging it in to charge simply slipped your mind.. So you have to plug it in and wait for it to charge.. And be thankful it wasn't an emergency.

So you have little problem remembering to charge your car and you are wondering what would happen if you had to remember to charge your car?

When I forget about it, I am usually going on day three without a charge and I usually have just enough, but I have to "make it enough". And if worse comes to worse, my chair can go in "free wheel". I don't think a car is going to get you where you need to go in neutral.
