one of the first rules my company tells us when we receive laptops is that you are liable if you leave your company laptop in a vehicle and it is stolen. you should’ve dropped it off first, but I get it. That sucks man

My boss had around 75k worth of company equipment stolen from his truck in his driveway several years ago.

I'd have paid money to watch a video of those thugs trying to figure out what they had and why they couldn't plug a Cisco firewall into the wall outlet at their apartment

It was in your trunk. They smashed the windows and popped the trunk from the inside and stole everything.

It was well out of visibility. You were being prudent.

Report it with work immediately. Stick to your story. You'll be fine.
You forgot...

Car was parked in a well lighted, residential area.

That happens in my company on occasion...hopefully your company had the foresight to install some security so the computer can’t be used by anyone that is unauthorized. You should report the computer stolen immediately in case someone tries to access your company’s network ar anything like that.

Other than that, it boils down to the cost of a used laptop, which is not much...

Our company crashes work vehicles and drops iPhones from ridiculous heights. Stolen generators, kids breaking company iPads at the employee's home. It is like the mayhem commercial. A stolen laptop wouldn't even register on the radar.

My employer would put a black mark in my record and have me pay for the new one.

Not if you tell the truth. No one is to blame...but the cops.
