You learn smithing new everyday. I never knew humans had a big impact of the mammoths extinction; and I never heard of an asteroid or comet hitting North America 10,000 years ago that led to the extinction of other large mammals...

Look up Younger Dryas event.

Also, if anyone was wondering the difference between mastodons and mammoths it's this.

Mastodons came about first and lived mainly in forests.

Mammoths came about the time grasses proliferated in the Miocene. We can tell this because of the shape and, therefore, use of their molars.

mastodon on left, mammoth on right.

Mastodons eat stemmy plants, mammoths eat grasses. One's for cutting one's for grinding. Mammoths grind.

Weren't mammoths smaller than elephants? I think they're cool and wouldn't mind seeing them brought back. But in reality I think the most notable thing about them may be that they are extinct.

For anyone who likes this kind of stuff, the book "Mammoth" by John Varley is a fun read. It's a sci-fi story about cloning a mammoth - one of my favorite books.

So a-holes like the dentist who shot Cecil can shoot them back into extinction like the animals that are endangered now?
