He means a vocal fry. It's that super annoying chick voice.

Definitely need a good dipping sauce with. Maybe a spicy Ranch or some honey mustard.

YouTube explanation

Edit: If you'd prefer to watch Emilia Clarke do it: YouTube at 0:22 and at the end.

So it’s basically women talking like the chicks from Clueless.

Not at all. It's not upspeak, it's the low pitched, raspy voice that just grates.

That didn’t piss me off as much as seeing that massive cocksucker, Jimmy Kimmel, on my screen.

Theranos chick is the best example of this. Kinda like a surfer dude voice mixed with Ben Stein

So it’s talking like Fran Drescher.

Eh more similar, but it's like talking like the Kardashians.

Elizabeth Smart isn't vocal fry or upspeak. She just puts on a fake deep voice. But the thought process is the same.

I'm guessing that women think it makes them sound more sophisticated and/or smart and/or intellectual when they use vocal fry. It comes across as fricking annoying and makes you want to clear your throat when you hear it.

Upspeak is when a woman is talking and the inflection of her speech is such that everything ends as though she's asking a question, instead of making a statement that sounds like a sentence. Because the inflection of the voice is different for reading a sentence vs asking a question. Hence, the "up" speak.

As I said, Elizabeth Smart is doing the fake deeper voice to make herself sound smart and sophisticated. She's a crazy bitch and a multi billion dollar scam artist.

Another annoying trait is those (men and women, but especially women) who end a statement with the vocal inflection that implies that they are asking a question regardless of whether it's a question or statement.

No. It would be like Fran Drescher drinking whiskey and smoking Lucky's for 30 years.

I'm with the OP... Chicks with deeper voices than the male co-host is an immediate station change.

Men use vocal fry? The gay ones maybe.

Every single person on "This American Life". It reached the point that I just couldn't listen any more. Ira Glass ran a segment on it and basically said to screw off if you don't like it. OK, bye.

Have you guys ever seen the Bad Lip Reading GoT parody?

Vocal fry is that kind of crackly voice that they use for Varys.

I had never heard of this and now I'm down the rabbit hole. This is exactly the kind of linguistic shite I live for.

This line cracked me up:

quote:

oh, somebody said this about me-- my voice-- this week. Somebody said I sound like a stoner 13-year-old. Somebody said that my voice sounds like driving on gravel. Somebody said they wanted to kill themselves hearing my voice.

I don't know how I feel about it, but I think I lean more on the side of it being unprofessional.. although I think many young women have this unintentionally.

I sat in a session at a conference a while back where the people (both men and women) presenting were all sub-30. If I had been an actual attendee considering using their services, I'd have looked elsewhere because the way they spoke during the presentation made them look like they have no idea what they're talking about.
