When I proposed, I just purchased the stone. Had the jeweler put in on one of those "show sets". Basically just a white gold band that he gave me for free. I was going to let her pick out her own setting, but she liked the solitaire look and stuck with just the band and stone. Saved me a nice chunk.

If that person was asking to live me in sickness and heath. Wipe my arse as I got old, make a livingbti support me, be there for me as my parents grew old and died, raise kids w me. Share all my housework and other endless tasks till we die.

I would be ok w a sweater.

The fact that that is your analogy is a sign of the times

Ahh, so this is one those "my friend" threads

Omg all of this because a buddy dodged a bullet with a unappreciative skank?!

Maybe if he asked her for some input, he would have known this about her before spending money on a ring.

Would it be weird to propose with just the stone and tell her to incorporate it into a setting she likes? I'm afraid she'll follow some trend of the month, and get some gaudy cluster around it or saphire accents. Whats wrong with the simple solitaire look?

I don't want the ring to have 'rims'

Kuj nothing is wrong with that. I would do like another poster said and have it mounted in a temp mount and propose, then tell her that if she likes y’all can pick out the setting together but set a budget.

Fiancee and I went to the jeweler together "just to look" and she tried a few on. This step is important because women are terrible at knowing what something looks like in person versus what they've been told, much like with penises. It turns out the cut she like didn't look good at all on her hand. So I made a mental note of what she liked and went back without her a few weeks later to have the ring made.

If you find out kind of what she likes and pay a price you can afford you pretty much can't go wrong. Unless you're with a materialistic gold digger, then you're better off dropping her anyway.

ETA: pro-tip, a Halo makes the center stone look much bigger than it actually is. The trade-off is that halos won't be in style in 20 years, but unless you're buying a solitaire cut that doesn't exact matter anyway

When he first gave it to me, I questioned him if he could afford it and should get something smaller. Now, 14 years later (I think) I still love it. It’s nothing fancy or over the top, but I love that he picked it out for me.

That’s the way it should be.
