Why do y'all think all pits kill? Or even attack? Or even have a bad temperament?

If you notice, I rarely come into these threads because I love dogs, and support anyone's right to have what they want. You keep saying that no one posting has any experience with them as your go to defense. Well, here's mine:

I've always felt that pits were unjustly labeled based on the behavior of a few, and it was only due to bad owners. My neighbors got a pit. They are retired grandparents. I had a boxer. Pit would always sniff around my fence. I was a bit scared of it's look, but did everything I could to acclimate him to my yard. Occasionally, if he was out, I'd pet him and allow my dog to come to the fence and get to know him. The owners assured me he was just a sweet, lovable, gentle giant. And he was for years.

One day, I came home, and found out that they left the gate open and he had bitten an elementary child that was simply walking home from school. One week later, my ex came over to pick up the kids for her week. She parked in my driveway and exited. The neighbors had left their gate open. The dog looked at her, then pounced, biting her on her thigh. She was in my yard, never got close to the neihbor yard. Ex came inside screaming. I looked at the nasty bite mark on her thigh.

There was no rhyme or reason for it to attack. But it did. Twice. And it had "great" owners.

I've read it for years. I saw it firsthand. That's why I'm leary of the breed, although I agree, the majority probably will never attack. The breed itself is more prone to.

Y'all act like a bunch of crazies over this subject.

I've never denied that pits bite people and at a higher percentage. However, they can be wonderful dogs. And both of my current pits are awesome animals and my previous 1 too. All 3 are/were smarter and more sweet than the dogs we had when I was a kid.

Here is just the guy to eliminate the entire breed.

I kid, Festus. I think your story exemplifies what 99% of us feel.

That dog should have been shot in the brain when this happened.

You seem pretty level headed. A couple of Boxers killed a small child in 2009. If it had been a few pit bulls do think that story would have ended differently?

Hmmmmmm.....That's not a bad idea. I can open a pit bull rescue shelter, and simply take care of all of them while they die with no explanation. Or they all start smoking pot. Either way, it's a win imo.

He was taken in by the dog catchers, and quarantined and tested. Since it was his first bite, he was released and the owners were fined.

Why would anyone keep a dog that had bitten an elementary school child walking down the street? Why was the dog loose?

I had a case where the guy was charged with cruelty to animals for dusting off two pits that were on his property (and who had previously killed one of his dogs and had engaged in two other attacks).

The case was dismissed. But the pit owner thought nothing about his admittedly aggressive dogs roaming the countryside and not staying secured on his property.

uh....First, it's not just about "biting." It's about maiming and killing. Nobody cares about a little nip. Second, you admit that the breed has a problem with biting (i'm assuming you mean biting and killing), higher than any other breed. How does that make them "wonderful" to you? The fact that your dog could snap and kill a kid at any moment is "wonderful"? Your willful ignorance is amusing.

Not sure I understand the question. If had been pit bulls, do I think the child would have lived?

More than 0.

How many people must a breed kill before the OT decides they all need to die?
