Wolverine nearly runs amok in NJ airport

Authorities tranquilized a 40-pound wolverine at Newark Liberty International Airport that had made a hole in its metal crate in an attempt to escape.

The male European Wolverine and its crate were inside a van, said Joe Pentangelo, a Port Authority spokesman. There were no injuries, he said.

Port Authority police responded to a report of a “loose animal” around 3:30 p.m. at Gate 135 in Terminal C, Pentangelo said. It was being taken to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center from Kristiansand Zoo in Oslo, Norway.

A Bronx Zoo veterinarian arrived with a replacement container for the animal. The wolverine ignored attempts to coax it to the new cage, so it was tranquilized and moved out of the damaged one, Pentangelo said.

The animal left Wednesday morning for a flight to Denver, where it would make a connecting flight, Pentangelo said. “He continued with his travels,” he said.
