Last night I couldn't sleep a lick due to an extreme burning pain on the right side of my jaw due to still having wisdom teeth. I have had on and off issues with them for the last few months (general soreness when chewing mainly, usually goes away after a couple of days), but last night was a whole other animal.

Got quoted $3K to have these suckers pulled. I am 32 and realize I probably waited way too long to have this procedure, but is this a high quote? That won't bankrupt me or anything, but I had a little sticker shock when they first presented it to me. Went in thinking it would be around $1500-2000 to have it done.

Full disclosure, I am 32, realize I probably waited way too long to have this done, and I believe the reason the price is so high is due to them wanting to put me under for 45 mins and 3 of my teeth needing "completely bony" removal.

Any advice or things I should expect? Is there a way to "shop around" for a better quote on something like this (probably not)? I know I will be out of commission for several days and probably eating nothing but soup and whatnot. I am very out of my element here.

Do yourself a favor and get recommendations for the best oral surgeons wherever you live. If that's too small of a place, try the next largest city.

This isn't like simply having a tooth pulled. You want someone good doing it, particularly if you have issues with impacted teeth.

$3k is high. $2k is what I paid without insurance and I went to a reputable periodontist in my area.

Do you have dental and medical insurance? I suffered with mine for a while (years). Went to the Dr, ended up using both insurances, cost me like $250, It was a breeze. I was at least 10 years older than you when I had it done also.

I paid in the hood of $1500.00 cash with my oral surgeon (1 tooth). definitely shop it around. I wouldn't do all of them at once. That's too much shite to endure for the weekend (yes, have the procedure on Friday). Bony removal sounds like a money grab to me. I was not anesthetized. Just some lidocaine (sp) and brute strength by Dr. Reagan to pull them out. I'm older than you so don't let the age thing mess you up.

ETA- I had the two bottom teeth removed.

Had mine out between 28-32 and paid about $1500. And that was with two bony impactions and one sitting on a nerve, surgeons did great. I’d get a second opinion.

Be careful taking the pain meds.
People have gotten hooked on them after having their wisdom teeth removed.

I went to Dr. Akin in BR, he was highly recommended. It was $2K (roughly) but that was for only the two lowers.

I have no insurance at all. I should have mentioned that.

I am generally pretty healthy and take care of myself, including my teeth. I know the risk I am taking, and I've always felt comfortable with it (I am risk-averse in general).

Not at all, bro.

I am frugal but very firmly working class, maybe lower middle class. I just save money, like spending time at home, and don't have any dependents.

I feel horrible for people who get saddled with these types of bills and don't have the means. Chick was trying to push loans on me with 18-25% interest rates. That type of extreme usury should be criminal.

I second this. Mine ended up costing me a little over $800 with insurance. I found a fantastic oral surgeon who performed the procedure with absolutely no complications, practically no discomfort, and surprisingly very little swelling. Ask around or go online and read reviews. That's how I found my guy, and it was well worth the time spent.

I think this is what I am going to do, and this is sound advice. My dad always told me to never skimp when it comes to your health.

I am slightly north of metro ATL so I have that network in my immediate vicinity.

I got my top two pulled last week. Didn’t get knocked out and they just numbed the area and gave me ibuprofen.

I have dental insurance but I don’t think the pre insurance price it was even close to $3k. But, it was a really quick procedure, maybe 5-10 minutes.

You could get a second opinion to see if another well respected dentist can give you a better price. Or you could get it done in Mexico

I had a simple extraction of one wisdom tooth. Paid out of pocket and it wasn't even $200.

Maybe you've got something else going on, like complications? I don't remember this being a big deal at all.
