A friend of mine who is a paramedic said that the interstates will be closing intermittently starting tonight. He's urging everyone to get their supplies this afternoon and then stay off the roads.

I'm not saying that isn't true but I've only heard of them doing that during events, not before. Roads are usually monitored in real time for closures.

I didn't mean for that post to reply to you directly. I was just passing along info that I've heard. I think regardless everyone needs to stay off the roads starting tonight unless for an emergency or they are essential personnel

Have her slide there in a Yeti. She can stay warm and destroy anything in her path

Beat me to it. Drive SLOW. Take off SLOW. if you plane on some ice, just let go of the wheel and hope for the best. There is literally nothing you can do. Anti-lock breaks help a TON. Also, traction control if you have it and 4x4 if you have it.

I'll be using 4 wheel drive in my truck if I have to get out. I would also keep really big car lengths between you and other cars. Absolute MORONS out there that just don't understand ice. It's certainly doable, it's EVERYONE else you have to worry about.

I have what may be a dumb question. Does the wind affect the precipitation at all? For instance a wind chill makes it feel colder but does that affect rain turning to sleet or sleet to snow, etc?

I think what we saw last time (and will happen to a lesser degree this time), is the cold air does not rise all the way into the higher (highest) parts of the atmosphere. The cold air stays lower, this creates more sleet and ice. If the column of air is tall enough you get snow. There is a boundary of warmer moist air hugging the coast which will prevent snow fall in some areas, and just REALLY shitty ice/snow/sleet crap that is so dangerous.
