Window Unit

Remodeling an extra room to turn into a playroom/game room for my kids. Square footage is around 475. I've read conflicting articles about how many btu's I need. I've also read that you shouldn't "over-power" the room w/ an excessively large unit.
The price between the 10,000 btu & the 11,000 btu is a few hundred bucks. Any suggestions/tips on what size to buy? What brands to buy & which ones to stay away from?

Buy the biggest 110 unit, if it craps out kick it the curb and repeat. I bought a 12,000 BTU 110 unit about 10 years ago to use for a hurricane. I put it in my bedroom window, put a blanket over the hallway to stop the air from going into the kitche and LR and that unit cooled my room and my 2 kids rooms. Still works too, it's a Frigidaire I believe.

Freidrichs are the best. A 10,000 BTU FOR 450 sq ft should be fine. A bigger unit would not be a problem except it draws more juice. It would cool down the room marginally faster but will cost more.

Have you considered a mini split for that room? Having a window unit just invites a burglar to enter the window the unit is mounted in.

The one I got priced was about 4x the price of the window unit.
I actually don't have to have a 110, because the outlet I have next to that window now is set up for a window unit (don't know what it is, but it has a sideways looking plug...electrical novice to say the least).
What are the pros/cons to buying a unit that has a 110 plug? I can easily get that outlet changed out if needed.

You can get a ductless mini split at home depot that will cool 500 SF for abt 800

This is a solid unit from what i hear from an AC friend.
Positives - No window mount, condensate runs to sewer, heat pump built in, 14 seer rating.
negatives - double the price of a window unit.

but at my house at least he'd have a LOT more success choosing a window without a bulky arse A/C unit screwed into place.
