I grew up in The Woodlands and I can't stand it when I go back now. I guess it is an excellent place to raise kids, but a lot of them are the wrong kind of kids...rich and stuck up to the nth degree.

What bothers me the most now is the lack of non-chain restaurants. I can't stand having to go to some awful chain for dinner when other cities with money are putting serious money into local restaurants who do it right. There are very few that i know of in the woods

And that's what you get with places just like it all over the place, a mall society playing community rather than BEING a community. It's the pattern that goes in the opposite direction of where many places in this country are going. It is the problem, not the solution.

These two cities aren't even remotely similar.

You may try to compare Bocage to the Woodlands, or the nicest parts of Highland road, but not the whole city.

A city with such a large population that has such a small number of local quality dinning establishments is just pathetic. That is BR.

While I am not going to defend BR, it has plenty of local dining establishments. The Woodlands has plenty of chain restaurants as well and will likely get more as it grows when the Exxon campus opens.

Just popping in to say that if I had to live somewhere like the Woodlands, I'd slit my wrists. Carry on.

Well there is the BRAVE initiative, and so far it's working in cracking down on crime in North BR.

I just read up on this. Definitely a step in the right direction.

Hopefully it's sustainable and doesn't turn into a temp project were at the end, a bunch of bureaucrats high five each other and move on as crime goes back up.

I'm sorry. Is being a pseudo-Disney world for adults supposed to be a good thing? The woodlands is a cornucopia of nothing but white people eating at chain restaurants. No thank you.

Delusion, you have it. A city with such a large population that has such a small number of local quality dinning establishments is just pathetic.

I'd be curious to know what establishments you've frequented. Because Baton Rouge has some great options when compared to places like Dallas and Houston when you consider the difference in size of city.

The self loathing "grass is greener" attitude of what is mostly a bunch of kids whose only experience of baton rouge is college life and the area within 5 miles of the university is laughable. Obviously a master planned community like Woodlands is going to blow Baton Rouge away when it comes to the problems BR faces.

And honestly, if you can't have fun in the Baton Rouge area (especially with New Orleans an hour or so away) then you are probably going to be pretty shitty miserable no matter where you live.

This is closer approximation to the Woodlands.

Why can't BR just try being a decent version of itself, rather than always looking elsewhere for "inspiration"?

Woodlands: Great free schools, great affordable new housing can get a 2004 built two story 2000 sq ft house , clean as a whistle with a community who will always keep it clean, relatively no crime, but it has no culture and chains=KILL ME NOW

New Orleans: horrible public schools so you have to shell out 10k+ a year, either pay out your arse to live in the city or live in metairie in a 1500sq ft house built in 1964, city is dirty and the community/govt will never have it clean, one of the most dangerous cities in America, but we have things written in French and a great restaurant scene= HEAVEN

The Woodlands is a 40yr old master planned community. How can anyone compare a city to a master planned community?

even with "strict" zoning laws a city is going to fall far short of a master planned community in terms of managed growth and development

this thread is stupid
