“We can hunt hogs year around and get more value from muh lease fees” is how the majority of these fkn morons think.

They do that on state and federal land around me. I have never checked into it but I will bet a coca cola the contracts to do this are very lucrative. They are also probably heavily lobbied for so the contractors can make even more money. I am certain its effective but I would bet 2 coca colas that the people doing it have no intention of making any dent in a resource that is self producing and lucrative to "control".

From what i understand, wild hogs are exceedingly gamey.

In my experience they are not great but not bad. Depends on what they have been eating and how they are handled in the field and in the kitchen. That said they make very good sausage. They can also be trapped, penned and fed and they will, in a few months, be what they actually are, domesticated pigs. They are meaner than shite but all pigs are. I know a guy who has about 600 acres and he does this with 8-10 a year and they are no different than any domesticated pig.

this is how you get more hogs.

Hunting them is now an industry, hogs aren’t going anywhere.

I posted an article in this thread from Texas Monthly about the feral hog epidemic. It touched on the fact that hog hunters were against ridding Texas of hogs. However, the hog hunters are hunting a relatively small area, compared to the rest of the state. Most extermination efforts will have little to do with hunters.

I don't think anyone expects the hogs to be totally exterminated. I think most people would be happy with just reducing the numbers, or even just stopping the growth - which even that seems impossible.

Lot of debate here but in my experience it depends on what they have been eating. The bigger boars are more prone to be carnivorous and eat carrion which makes them smell and taste bad for obvious reasons.

I have eaten both big boars and sows that have been on my feeder for a month and they taste fine.

Texas Monthly: Apocalypse Sow

quote:

Bodenchuk had told me that the government doesn’t retrieve pig corpses because an environmental impact assessment showed that the cost of recovery exceeds the value of the meat they might provide. Besides which, Bodenchuk added, he knows too much about wild pig pathogens to eat them. They can carry more than thirty viral and bacterial diseases and nearly forty parasites. Humans can get brucellosis, for instance, if a pig’s fluids or tissues come in contact with a cut during field dressing. “I could dress a deer and eat a sandwich at the same time. When I handle pigs, I put on rubber gloves,”

I’d say a majority of landowners would prefer a range from complete annihilation to reduced populations.

I’d say tenant still hunters are ok with having something extra to shoot at and recoup their corn and lease money outlay.l as well as more hunting opportunity outside of deer season.

I’ve killed a truckload o hogs with a .22-I shot a big boar once between the eye and the bullet didn’t penetrate.

You know what would work...

Bring in pythons. Let them go free and your wild hog problem would be over. Worked here in FL

My guess is it was too effective? Anyone else recall this?

None of the chemicals or poisons they have come up with have proven to work.

They have been a major problem, but it's getting worse every year.

Not worse enough yet. LSU should say frick it and just give the poison to the public to eradicate them. Until then, let them eat.

I love to hunt wild hogs. I usually hunt them in Arkansas but would also enjoy a hunting trip to Louisiana.

Maybe we could use them like we used to use whale oil? I think i just found a new "green energy" scam to sell to environmental morons.

Nah...they would claim that they fart when you shoot them.

The only positive to Hogs is their mere annoying existence has allowed the possession of silencers and other cool shite to be easier to obtain

Need to turn the military on them. Better than sending them overseas

I mean, think about it. An invasive species that breeds prolifically, destroys wherever it goes, attacks humans without regard for age.

Wipe them out

This. When I started Cancer treatments, I was told, hunt and eat all the wild game you want. Please don't handle, clean, or eat wild hogs, too much chance for infection. Now I shoot and let them feed the Buzzards. Pigs destroyed three of my feeders in the last couple of weeks. Hate the Bastards!

If they would reduce food stamps, issue carbine rifles, then teach dependents how to dress a hog, two problems solved.

I think the first thing in Louisiana that needs to be done is open all WMAs and other state and federal lands up to year round hog hunting.

A a$$hole in Grant parish bought a bunch of them at a sale barn and turned them loose on his property but he didn’t have a fence anywhere close to being able to keep them contained. Now they’re all over the place.

Also heard about a farmer not far from me that bought some and turned them loose because he thought it would be cool to have them to hunt. Was told he is very much sorry he did that.

As far as eating they are very good but I only eat those I kill in the winter that are eating acorns, pecans and deer corn.Boars are good if you drop them in their tracks.I’m sure one that has been caught by dogs would be nasty.
