I used to marvel at how geeky even my most attractive Japanese friends were. They dare to be geeks, Americans consciously try to project cool, in a way that most Asians don't. That alone precludes under-30 Americans from doing this. When I was sick in Japan, I was issued a facemask and expected to wear it. It's the norm and other people just see you as conscientious-kind of like you are giving them fair warning, That, combined with wearing one defensively, seems like a logical step in flu season.

yeah it's mostly about the appearance of helping. today, it's not as much about actually helping society as much as it's about appearing like you're helping

Are they referring to hospital like surgical masks, or the kind you used to be able to buy at CVS or Walmart? Either way, none of them can be found anywhere. Plus, probably made in China. Anybody know?

No, I would disagree with that it is about appearance.IMHO, It's not about appearances in Japan. Being conscientious is just a deeply-ingrained social construct . It's like why at night when you come to a red light and there is a car across from you, you dim your lights. It's a "you first" approach to living. The opposite of our Me First rugged individualist you can eat me approach. And it's very helpful at these kind of moments when cooperation is required. Not so great when audacious individuality is required.

This is true. Wearing a mask is part of their everyday living experience. It’s generally worn because of the amount of pollution coming from China.

I like how we’ve been told recently not to go out and buy up all the masks because they don’t really do anything to prevent you from getting sick and the medical professionals need them.
If they don’t work, then why do medical professionals need them?

It was all a LIE because the USA was caught short because they were being made in China.
Common sense has finally won out.

My buddy’s wife’s family is all from Hong Kong. He told me her grandmother hates chinese mainlanders more than anything in the world.
