Cold winters
Expensive
Economy becoming more focused and less diverse
I still think NYC is awesome though.

I took the next step in my career last year with the role about as close to the pinnacle of my field as I'm willing to pursue.
In the process, I interviewed with a bunch of companies, many HQd in the NE and traveled there for interview rounds.
Most of these roles really wanted relo in about 2-3 years, and the jobs were mine if I agreed - but they wanted me to be sure so I researched a ton.
Eventually I concluded that I'd basically be paying a cost for the right to live there. Taxes are nearly a mortgage in the South, and you are almost forced to live in an exclusive neighborhood to escape crime (or find somewhere in the sticks).
Traffic from Conn. to NY is unbelievable, even on a Sunday.
Ultimately took a job with a company in the South, even though my long term $ is probably less.

Is their net migration inbound or outbound?
People in NY and NJ can generally afford to leave to go elsewhere.
People in Louisiana and Mississippi are generally too poor to pack up and go somewhere else.

What are you talking about? Were you in Newark and Philly only?

I love how everyone here talks about the cold as if the heat of the south isn't just as bad.
As they told me out in Phoenix: You can't shovel sunshine.
The heat in the South is only miserable from Mid-June to September 1st. Even then, the mornings are mostly nice, and there's plenty of lakes, beaches, and pools to enjoy the hot weather.
The cold in the North can last from mid-November to May in some places. I know in Ann Arbor, the highs were barely getting into the 50s by early April and still getting hit with cold spells and snow even in early May. Many places in the northern Midwest and Northeast suffer from constant cloudiness, perpetual precipitation (ever experience two weeks straight of grey skies, misty rain, and 45 degree temperatures?), and high winds.

And if posit that the cold (at least in the NE) is only miserable from early/mid-January to early/mid-March. November here is actually really nice, and maybe I've been lucky the last 4 winters but December has never been bad for me either.

Ugly architecture
I'm from Long Island, NY
I can understand all of the reasons originally given but your addon, "Ugly Architecture" is outlandish
Cape Cod style homes are gorgeous
NYC has more examples than can be counted but my favorite place to appreciate architecture is Central Park because of all of the little details.

Post back on here about 9/8 and tell me how the weather has been the last week or so. It's hot as hell in South Louisiana from the end of May/beginning of June until about mid October. The other 7 months it's actually pretty decent.
