re: Why pay 1300 dollars a night for a hotel room at Walt Disney World?

Nobody stays at the Contemporary because it's awesome, they stay there because walking a couple hundred yards with catatonic kids in Florida heat to a icy hotel room beats all the other options
Back in the mid 90s when we took our two sons to Disney World…we had reservations at the Carribean Resort for $99 a night which was a stretch for us back then. About a month before arrival I received a phone call and asked if I would like to switch to the Contemporary instead. Back then the Contemporary was $200+ a night. I told them I could not afford that price but they explained that it would be the same price as the Carribean. I’m not sure if that is common for Disney World to do that or if we were just lucky.
So we jumped on it. It was very nice to have the early entry and then use the monorail to get back to the room in the middle of the afternoon to rest and cool off before going back in the evening. Very convenient. The Contemporary also hosts the Character Breakfast which the two sons enjoyed.

Early park access, extended hours at the park, perfectly timed buses to the parks, nice breakfast, great place to stay on a “no park day.” If you’re going for 5 days, you’re going to want a resort day, to just relax, wake up late, eat there and enjoy the pool/amenities
Also, those resorts have characters that come to the resort and also, some people like to take 1-2 hour break for naps for kids and it’s nice for that too and includes Disney Water Park for free on arrival day
There’s a reason WDW offers different levels of their onsite hotels

Yeah. The New Disney Vacation Club tower had the venue demolished.
That’s in the past like riding up front with the Monorail Pilot.

It never made a lot of sense to me, And we have stayed at the Wilderness, Grand Floridian, and Contemporary.
Last time we stayed in a Finding Nemo suite at Art of Animation and it was far less than a regular room at the deluxe and had three beds and two bathrooms.
If you are not an all day at the park type, I can see the Grand Floridian or Polynesian making a bit more sense but not much.
Now the new Four Seasons is worth it.
Universal at one of the three Deluxe resorts makes more sense. Unlimited express pass and great pools.

Way, way back in the day when I was a poor grad student, friends and I went to Key West for quarter break. Most campgrounds were $5 a night, and we were driving right near Disney. They had a campground then, at over $20 for a tent camp spot. So we found a stata park a couple of hours south.

I just went a few weeks ago and stayed at the Port of Orleans. Still cost me 6 to 7 grand. There was 5 of us though.

The Disney secret is to VRBO some sucker's time-share he doesn't use for pennies on the dollar. Get a multi-bedroom condo with kitchen at a resort with pools and water slides for a fraction of the price you pay to stay at a Disney property. Rent a car and you've got flexibility to hit Universal, Disney, Sea World, whatever.

The biggest takeaway in this thread should be that your lodging is the smallest part of the overall cost to go to Disney World

Is this resort nice? Can you take a water taxi to the transportation hub?

Yes on the water taxi, in front of the Wilderness Lodge. To Magic Kingdom as well.

I have to quibble with this. Im not a fan of modernist architecture and even I have to admit how damn impressive the CR is. Its like something out of Star Wars, especially with the monorail coming IN to the building. Lots of people take one look at it and go “I Have to stay at that place”.

One of the masterful things about WDW is that they make money off both ends of the spectrum.
Obviously there are the Disney adults who make their lives about Disney and will spend most of their free income on it.
On the other end there are people who so massively dread the whole thing that they'll pay monumental amounts for even a modest decrease in burden, and WDW gives them options to do it

The Contemporary is under a huge remodel currently. Not sure when it will be over. Check before booking.

There are rooms in the contemporary that aren't connected to the main structure. We prefer those as they are not as loud.

Because dumb asses will pay it.

Yeah. And you could do Bay Towers.
