Is that true? I never really thought about it. I guess I can only think of 3 off the top of my head.

So Alabama is currently planning to replace the GWT with......a bridge instead of a tunnel

There is info on the why here:

It's in several other cities. It's probably a better idea at this point than a loop, which I don't think will happen because the political will isn't there in a lot of the communities.

Think about how often the bridge is stopped because of accidents. Now think about that shite underground..

The river channel around the new bridge is close to 100 feet deep. Can you imagine the engineering it would take to build a tunnel deep enough under the river to be safe and sustainable? The cost of that would be tremendous if it is even possible. I would imagine that the tunnel would have to be at least 150 ft deep as it goes under the main channel. But, I'm no engineer so I could very well be talking out my arse lol

Are there any civil engineers or other similarly informed individuals in the OT who can talk about why tunnels aren’t being discussed as an alternative to a new bridge to solve Baton Rouge’s traffic problems? I’m sure it’s been considered and eliminated as a possible solution for good reason, but I’m curious to know why. Prohibitive cost comes most immediately to mind, but....

The George Wallace Tunnel (GWT) in Alabama was finished in ‘73 at a cost of $50M, which is $293.7M in today’s dollars. The GWT is 3,000 feet long. From one side of the Mississippi River to the other where the current bridge is built is about 2,700 feet. What I know is that we have many different considerations here that they may not have there such as levees and boat traffic depth which would likely drive up the cost, but would those things drive it up THAT much? $293.7M is about 1/4th the amount of the most recent bridge estimate I saw of $1.2B. For that amount, without any more information, it seems like you could build multiple tunnels for the price of a bridge. Also, I’m sure the Corp would have something to say about a Mississippi River tunnel.

I’m sure I’m missing something (if not multiple things) here. I know nothing about engineering, just curious. Please school me. Thanks.

I'd rather the US spend more time on creating a fully autonomous highway system. The human aspect of driving is a major factor in traffic jams.

From crashes, to tailgating, to simply not having every vehicle travel at a uniform speed. If we fully automate the interstates, we would see far less rush hour delays.

yes. belle chase, Harvey, and Houma. 2 out of those 3 are getting retired in the near future (belle chase, houma) I believe.

belle chasse needs to be retired...it's been a cluster since it was built...a high bridge needs to replace the existing drawbridge as well...

harvey is far better built...

There are currently 3 tunnels in LA. All have substantial maintenance issues and costs. LA soils do not lend themselves to tunnels at all.

Where did you get your conversion for 1973/$50M to 2018/$293M?

Wrong! It will not replace the tunnel. It is simply and additional crossing since the tunnel is congested with the flow of traffic.

"Will the bridge replace the tunnels?

The bridge is simply an addition to existing transportation options

The Wallace tunnel and Bankhead tunnels will continue unchanged"

Trust me, you don't want tunnels.

is a complete fricking cluster frick. Every day from 4-6 pm traffic gets backed up for 2+ miles with 2+ hour delays. Wrecks all the time from people not knowing how to drive.

Would be an improvement for Baton Rouge.

I work there multiple times a week and besides the loading dock down there, there’s an entire underground floor in NOLA. It is massive with cafeterias and offices as far as you can see. The engineers that pulled that off were damn good.

IIRC those tunnels are not dug through the sediment but metal tubes sitting on the seabed.

I dont think so, it's too soft. You have to get to something stable, imo

Maybe a combination of the 2, kinda half buried.

Going Google now, lol

Yep, floated , sunk, then covered in cement...then pumped out and completed. Would live to know the details of site prep and how they settled after being sunk, etc

quote:

Tunnel, actually two separate tunnels (one for two lanes of travel eastbound, and one for two lanes of travel westbound on Interstate 10), was built in sections and floated to the proper positions, then sunk. Each section was sunk next to the previous section and joined underwater. When all sections were connected, and concrete set into place, they were pumped dry and finished out.

This would be the case everytime it rains. There is a reason no one has basements in south Louisiana.
