I thought about this too. Most people are going to watch the Super Bowl regardless of the day it airs. My guess is that if you put it on Sunday night you will also get the rest of folks who may just be looking for something to watch on Sunday night.

If my team isn't playing in it, I'm not going to structure my Saturday around a single football game. Especially if the weather is nice. I'm pretty much hanging around the house every Sunday evening so it will at least be on in the background

yes, if anyone curious of the answer would google it, the entire first page is articles explaining it's due to audience exposures and ratings

BUT, Mr. Smart Gut, how do they knooow that the ratings would not be just as good on Saturday? They've never even tried it. It may be that they actually improve!

Because when the NC being played its usually the first round of the NFL playoffs so it sort of fills the sport for MNF, which has high ratings.
Bettors who have a bad weekend will try to make it up on the Monday night game, bettors who won big will put some winnings on the game so there is a lot of interest in the monday night game.
