So I was perplexed to see this call to remove the claiborne overpass without a proposition on how that portion of I10 is supposed to be replaced.

Well looking at the interstate ALL of Metairie basically got cut in half by I-10. Is that not an intrusion on the natural flow of those neighborhoods? At least the Claiborne overpass actually provides coverage for the space underneath it. I see block parties under there literally every weekend. Plus it adds a bunch of parking to that area. It just seems weird to complain about one but totally ignore that the interstate basically ripped all of new orleans in half and not just that one area.

I10 in Orleans went through an existing well developed area when it was built

In Metairie, there was hardly anything developed for I10 to go through at the time it was built

eta: of course, trying to do anything about it now is a waste of time. It's already there, if there was a community destroyed it's already been destroyed and removing the I10 won't bring it back

because complaining about an existing interstate is a complete waste of time and energy, especially under the guise that it's a racist road

I can debunk the “the bridge ruined a nice area” argument in two seconds:

Drive to the other side of Claiborne between the interstate and Carrollton. It’s a complete shite hole. The bridge didn’t ruin the area, the inhabitants ruined the area. The bridge was built so normal folk could bypass the inhabitants.

how much development do you think was out in Jefferson parish at I10 during thr late 50s early 60s

If anything, I-10 did nothing but bring economic development to the swamp farm land

There are a lot of residents that are more concerned about the removal than the current impact.

Developers need to quit trying to "help" these neighborhoods.

I never got this, I10 cuts off other areas, you just got to go down one of the streets it doesn't.

It's not like it completely keeps you blocked off from everything. Like city park, well yeah I can't walk across the interstate there but there are ways around it.

I a block from the interstate in a house built in 1939. It was not a farmhouse and wasn't the only house in the neighborhood at the time.

Nah, none of that land was developed in the late 60s.

Well shows what I know. I thought all of that land sort of had been developed a long time.
