The Spanish were incredibly racist when colonizing and Mexico and central America was unsettled as far as war and such until nearly 100 years after America.

From my readings, i have gathered USA and Canada were extension colonies while Spain extracted most of the resources and left a shitshow in their colonies

You would be correct. A lot of empirical work has shown that the institutions in central and South America were extractive as opposed to the inclusive institutions in the Us and Canada.

There’s also evidence to suggest that the legal systems played a role.

The former Spanish colonies are generally pretty dysfunctional.

Mexico also has awful geography.

Absolutely. It’s a shame that we took Panama from them to create the Canal. The Colombians are far more favorable as a government and a partner than the Panamanians ever will be.

It’s also a shame that we gave the Canal away just because the UK gave the Suez Canal to Egypt. Thanks Jimmy

Very true. I use this as an example when people say "we arent nation builders" or "we dont send in our military to do xyz in other nations". Ummmmmmm yes we do, and almost always have have. Agree with the reasons or not, is one thing, but dont tell me sending our military in to influence other nations politics isnt as American as apple f-ing pie.

For those that dont know we sent in marines to fight the colombians in 1904-ish when the colombians backed out of building the canel.

Freaking chaps my hid that the chinese own it now.

Anyway....Colombia, though has it's issues, they are the only ones that have been able to keep the socialist military types away. It's hard, and Obama f'd things up when he forced them to put in "Unions" friendly wording in the free trade agreement the dems held Bush up from signing. "Unions" in Colombia are socialist guerrilla heavy ie FARC. Not like unions here.

If we truly want to fix south of the border we need to truly support Colombia, then get Venezuela back on as their people still remember the "good days" before chavez. Then slowly find a way to influence posivetly.

Another big problem for many is the higher indian pops in countries like MX. Thats a different beast. Lots of people that "just dont know" how to be proper or truly civilized.

Right. How Spain treated their colonies more exploitive than how England set up the colonies in North America. The US and Canada had a foundation to build on. The Spanish set up a foundation of corruption and exploitation. Or at least that is what I have picked up from my superficial and shallow reading. I'm far from well educated on it.

The Portuguese were pretty invasive in their colonies. The French still control some of their former colonies.

Purely cultural. Tribal mentality instead of individualistic.

Honest question/thought. The closer you are to the equator, the shittier the country. Obviously this is not set in stone, but the more I think about it, by and large it is true.

Eta: no question in my post, so just a thought
